1995 xt600 misfire

I have a problem with my motor misfiring at all rpm's. It's not a constant misfire but it happens occasionally and sometimes kills the motor when stopped. It is definitely more prominent when cold. I've cleaned out the carb due to another issue with a fuel leak. Any ideas or where to start with the troubleshooting?

Check all plug in connections for corrosion, check that grounds are clean. Have you checked your battery voltage, both running and not to see if it is charging. Running you should see approx. 14 volts +or- a little. If you see 12 volts or less when running, you either have a bad battery or your charging system is not working.

The newer model Xt's with the TCI ignition use battery/charger power to run the ignition. Older CDI model use stator power to run the CDI module via separate windings and other windings to charge the battery and run the bike accys. Yours should be using a TCI module. A TCI module will have built-in plugs, CDI uses wires extending out of the CDI module.
