1990 XT600 TDI or CDI

dohHi everyone, hope someone can help me.I have a 1990 XT600E am going to use for MX practice, just for fun!! Recently connected new wiring (old wiring loom stripped off engine) connected up and hey presto the engine turned over. When doing this one of the loose wires touched and blew the ign coil. I bought a new one, this new one has 2 terminals , have tried to get engine to turn over but no way. THEN I had READ ABOUT A CDI UNIT(or a TDI unit) I don't have one on my bike. Yes call me thick! As I don't understand about motorcycle wiring, it seems that the CDI unit is the replacement for contact points. O.K. On my old Husqvarna 1973 MX bike that had electronic ign coil but I don't remember a CDI unit. Anyway do I need a CDI or a TDI for my XT600E P.S. Easy wiring diagram would be great!!! Hope someone can help me.:mchappy:

Yes you need a cdi unit, its suppose to be underneath the seat of the bike.

Xt600e cdi unit

Hi there XTROCK, I have a rectifier beneath the seat, I think that the CDI unit fits under the front head frame, behind the steering yolks. There seems to be a loose brkt with nothing fitted in it. Still not sure re. CDI OR TDI. Read about this briefly yesterday, maybe different because electric start only. Thanks for a quick reply:thumbup1:

You have the 3TB? rectifier in the back of the seat and the CDI in the front of the seat.

Doesn't the 3TB's have TDI's instead of cdi's? Somewhere right in that time it was switched. You'd know the difference because the cdi's had the wires and connectors coming out of it and the TDI's just have plugs receptacles.
3AJ motors are cdi, then 3TB went TDI, not interchangeable supposedly, but I bet it can be done.

You maybe right, the box is sold as CDI unit on ebay,Ignitor Unit Assembly in parts catalog . But anyway what its named you need the unit for ingition and its place is under the seat.

I thought "TDI" didn't sound right, didn't remember the words it stood for off hand.
Too much jeiger when younger.

1990 3tb xt600 tci

I now know that I need a TCI for my bike, but where is the best place to get one? I have checked Ebay but not the correct ones available.

Very Pricey. I do not know of an aftermarket unit, anyone else?

I do not have a wiring diagram for the newer TCI unit. Perhaps an older type could be retrofitted with some modifications. I know the Zeeltronic is not fussy, give it power and a trigger and it will fire. You might have to change to an older type ignition coil.

Does the newer XT's use stator power or battery power to power up the TCI? Borut make units for other bikes that use battery power to power up his unit, then all you need is a trigger and maybe a matching coil.

Can someone point me to a schematic or send me one?

I found a schematic for an "E" model with electric start. Not sure of year but I suspect they are all about the same as far as the TCI goes. This unit does run on battery on the Red/White wire and is only triggered via the stator on 2 wires so it has a single pickup for triggering. Should be easy to adapt an existing battery powered unit to fire and XT-E model. I am sure the coil would need to be changed out for the older type. Borut has new high out coils if I remember correctly.

I will inquire of Borut at Zeeltronic to see if he can adapt his to work.

After looking over the schematic, it will be very easy for Borut to use an off the shelf model. Single trigger, operates off the bike 12volts. The Zeeltronic has a shift output that could drive the "REV" light directly. Very easy to hook up but would most likely need a replacement coil like the older XT's use.

I have asked Borut about this but have not gotten a reply, it is late in Slovenia so may be tomorrow.

Mezo, do you have a newer Xt using the TCI ignition? Borut will need a tester, I only have the older models and could not test one.
