1990 XT 600 Kickstarter

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out exactly what parts I would need to order to put a kickstarter onto my bike, as presently it doesn't have one.

I've looked at the factory manual posted here and searched for another version which isn't in Spanish, but I'm not the best at reading exploded technical diagrams, especially ones in Spanish. Could anyone help me out here as far as a resource goes to find a parts list / a diagram I could look at? Hell if you can even tell me what page to look at in that PDF I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

-Zach

There are kits. I bought mine ('95) with the kick starter already installed.

If you need any help with Spanish, let me know, maybe I can help.

Good luck,

Esteban

You need the parts from a pre-1990 XT600.

1989 parts work! 1990 doesn't have them!

All parts!
OEM Parts
NOTE:from 27 to 34 are for the automatic decompressor...

PLUS part numbers 26,27 and 28 on this link:
OEM Parts

I've done this mod on my 1990 XT600E!

If you want to add the decompressor parts you need to put the parts from number 27 to 34 on the first link PLUS PARTNUMBERS 28 to 33 on this link:
OEM Parts

Plus Part 12 on this link:
OEM Parts

P.S.: You need ALL THE PARTS specially the kickstart stopper parts!

Personally I was going the way of a manual decompressor witha lever on the handlebar instead of the automatic decompressor but I ended up not putting any decompressor parts!

Have a look here, mate - page 34 of the PDF listing (numbered 32 on the page itself) shows an exploded view of the kickstarter mech parts. These are common to all XT600s (less the last XT600Es which have a slightly different clutch cable routing and right cover).

These parts are sometimes available second hand in Europe, but usually get snapped up quickly as everyone wants to do what you have in mind. I'm not sure if all the parts are available new from Yamaha, though I bought part no 15, the return spring post, new last year, when helping a mate fit a kickstart to a 3AJ Tenere. Turned out to be a good plan, because after 3 weeks in Morocco we had boiled our admittedly old batteries dry, and would have been bump-starting his bike otherwise!:thumbup1:

Good luck! The xt600.de site has lots of other good stuff on it by the way!

Thanks for all the tips guys I'm going to check out the links you provided me today, and I think I found a website that will sell most of the OEM parts I need to do it.

I wish I could read / understand German because I'd be all over that site. Unfortunately English and a small amount of Spanish are all I know.

Thanks again guys, this is all very helpful!

kick start

I'm rebuilding a 1991 xt600 motor for my 1983 34L and adding a kick. I found that the US eBay site was the best value. (I'm in Oz) The guy I bought the assembly off also had the stopper parts that protect the inner cases. Some of the smaller bits I got through mu local Yamaha shop. All I need now is a lever!
