1984 Tenere 600 XT running problems
 

Hi, I have an old 84 XT 600 Tenere, which I have now owned for a few months, after initially purchasing the bike it ended up in a motorcycle workshop, for a number of weeks, having "bits and pieces" done to the electrics, to get it running correctly. It has now been back on the road for approx 4 weeks, and although it has been running releatively well, at times (this is on odd occassions) the bike starts to mis-fire and splutter about around 3-4 thou revs, and sometimes it just dies altogether. Now I have discovered more by that when it does completely die, if I tip the bike over to almost 45 degrees to the left, and leave it a couple of mins, 9 times ot of 10, it will restart relatively easily, any suggestions. Also, I noticed the nylon /plastic chain protecter, that is up near to the damper end of the swing arm, has fallen appart, is this a particular danger if the chain is rubbing on the swing arm.

I would not let the chain run on the aluminum for very long, eventually it will cut into the swingarm destroying it. while you have the swingarm out take the time to clean and re-grease all the damper linkage bearings.
How much fuel is in the tank when the bike quits? if the level is low you might be hitting the reseve, leaning the bike over transfers gas from the right side of the tank allowing the bike to re-start. My bike begins sputtering a bit before I hit the reserve level, I ussually switch over before it stalls.

Thanks for your time in thinking about my problem, I always keep the tank 3/4 to full so it does not normally get near to a situation of requiring the reserve.

So its not the easy solution.
The bike seems to be running out of gas. next time the bike stalls remove the fuel line to check if there is flow, there could be a blockage at the fuel valve screen in tank. if you remove the valve it's best to replace the gasket and washers to prevent leaking, only a few dollars from yamaha.
If you have flow from the tank the blockage could be in the inlet of the carburator, needle seat screen.
