12v dc adaptor
 

hi there bike fans,
today im fitting a 12 volt cigarete plug adaptor to my bike (xtz660) and im wondering if anyone out there has done similar, and is there any reason why i shouldnt fit one of these sockets.

Yes there is: cigarettes are bad for you. Besides, I don't know how you're gonna light your smokes with one hand while riding.

More seriously, though, there is a much smaller version around, used by BMW and available from electronics outlets. Saves space, but your cigarette lighter doesn't fit in!

You can get the bits from Touratech. They do a BMW style fitting and also sell an adaptor from BMW fitting to normal car fitting. I've not fitted it yet, but it will be used to drive my charger for Nimh AA camera batteries, and also a charger for my PDA. Yes, I'm a sad little Techy!

Oooops! I didn't read your first message properly - I thought you wanted to know where to get the bits - but you've clearly already got them. I see no problem - I will be fitting an inline fuse holder with mine - none supplied with kit, but I don't like the thought of my battery discharging itself at full current through a short.Hope this helps.

Has anyone put an adaptor on a 3AJ Tenere? If so how and did it work? I think I can remember Dave Lambeth saying something about it not being a great idea.

my triumph has one as standard, it would come in very handy with a couple of provisos. for a start, triumph, honda, BMW standard sockets are smaller than car cigar lighters, about half the size. not a problem if you dont smoke, but getting plugs this size is, most car accessory factors wont have them (anyone know different? please let me know!)my local triumph dealer wants £30. on the plus side, anything made to plug into a bike should have this size already fitted, like heated clothing, BMW GPS stuff etc.

Order a catalogue as it really comes in handy and they are far cheaper than BMW or Touratech.By the way look under warning lights (odd!) and look for the several different types of DIN plugs and sockets.
They even do one that will fit DIN and lighter sockets.

Very wide selection of products, even cheaper.. DIN socket for £3.50 with cap. You can also get screw top sockets, waterproof for marine use for about £15.

I've fitted one to my 3AJ. Its the small fitment being the same as a BMW. I brought it from my local bike store which also sell's these battery charging systems.

Anyway I've fitted it on the dash above the choke, first drilled a pilot hole then used a wood drill bit to get the required size, taking it very easy, cleaning up with a small file, don't get to carried away as the plastic is quite soft. The Earth wire went to the light earth fitting. The Positive lead I covered with a piece of old fuel hosing as its strapped to the chassis under the tank. I wanted to be sure I didn't rub it through. There is a few centimetre extra at the battery end in case its ever pulled, I've also fitted an inline fuse. Its been on the bike for over a year without any problems. It does have the waterproof cap, just as well really as its always bloody raining here....

The only down side I see is, leaving electrical goods attached with the engine off or trying to pull too much current. Personally I think a telephone battery charger or PDA is fine.

It took an hour or two to fit at a very steady place, only problem is now I've seen the underside of the tank and that's going to need some rust prevention work.

Now I need to find time to build a centre stand, luggage racks and enlarged the side stand foot.

If anyone is going to buy the BMW size outlet, the parts are much cheaper if you buy them from a John Deere tractor supplier. Same exact part- no BMW markup.

just bought a water proof/rust proof cigret lighter from a site that sell stuff for boats. seems prity good. easy to fit no worries. bought this one because if nothing is plugged in to the hole, a normal cigret lighter will rust up prity quick.
apart from that there all the same, they feed you power the same way no matter what shape and size they are. cost me 6 quid for mine, cheap as chips!
to fit it to a 3aj you need to run a wire (+) to the brown wire on your igniton cable set. this gives you ignition live so the power turns off when the ignitions turned off. then run another wire (-) to the battery neg. hope this helps

We have fitted all three of our 3aj bikes with them. Run straight from the batt so we can use 12v lights, charge things and run laptops without the key in. Very handy and no problems

Fitted my 1VJ with one - marine version (with cover) I got off ebay. Wired it straight to the battery, with a switch and a fuse, fitted it to the handlebars. Plan to use it for recharging my AA batteries as I drive. Will know in a few weeks how it holds out, but so far no problems.
