your suggested preferance?
i am used to driving h-d, but i realize it's shortcomings for the trip i am planning to SA.
i have been like a kid in the candystore this week drooling over the new ride possibilities and what lies ahead. i was wanting to stick with bmw but not sure the best route. i'll give you my preferrences in order and await your valued critique. i like the 1200rt for it's abs system, comfort and design features. could it possibly be a target though? next, the 1200gs strikes me as a possibly better option for unexpected road situations. i plan to stick to blacktop and gravel when no other choice, but i am no sure what roads to expect. lastly, the dakar, mainly for engine size. i realize it is a much loved favourite by posters comments. honestly, i am not a great wrench beyond basics and this the reason i am wanting to purchase new. thanks in advance, kevin |

Kevin, if you are not confident of your mechanical abilities, you might also want to consider a japanese bike. BMWs can be either really reliable or a real nightmare...even when new. The 650gs/dakar seems to be the exception.
Of course, I am also a bit biased towards the Honda Transalp (not available new in the USA), but if you want a new bike, have you also considered the 650 V-Strom? This may be a good choice if you are doing mainly blacktop with light gravel. ------------------ Dave www.mototrekker.com

If you are used to and enjoyed the H.D. lineup why not look at the new Buell Ulysses XB12X. It's MSRP is $11,500.00 US plu an additional $900 for a 3 box luggage system.
The first one has just arrived here and they look to be a possibility for those of us who plan to spend our time on harder surfaces. Whatever you choose I'm sure will be fine. I think its more attitude than ride that makes the trip. Rick |
