Xt600e Or Ttr600re?
 

Hi new to the forum - planning of doing a RTW trip in 2010 before I get too old. Read most of the RTW books and looking at my budget for a bike (approx £2500 for the basic bike) think the Yam would be the best option. Am thinking of buying a bike in the near future, so I can do a bit of off-road riding on the IOM (where I live at the mo) as well. So the basic questions are what are the differences between the XT and TTR, which is best for off-road riding and which would be easier to convert into a RTW bike?

I may be a little biased cos I've got one but honestly you can't go wrong with an XT600E.

It will do almost anything well. The only thing it struggles with is high speed motorway work. Providing you are happy "poodling" around at no more than 70 mph, It's not a real problem.

A truly bullet-Proof engine, good build quality and plenty of power. It handles well too around town. No need to go into pedigree with regard to RTW trips, it's been just about everywhere on earth and is probably the No1 adventure bike when it comes to Sub-Saharan African trips (followed closely by Beemers).

I procured my XT in January 2008 for only £1,600. It's in superb condition and has only 5,000 (genuine) miles on the clock. There are still plenty of "goodans" about. No need to pay more than about £1,800 for a late XT600E and £2,200 for a nice XT660 (It's direct replacement).

By the way, how old is too old? I'm of 1963 vintage (44) and still capable of a few miles yet...

Hi thanks -a litle digging found several threads on a similar vein. Think I'm leaning towards the TTR -looks like it can be converted into an acceptable RTW bike and provide some fun for off-roading on the IOM whilst I'm saving the cash to finance the trip.
As for how old - 46 in 2 weeks or so - so I'd like to start the trip in 2 years on my 48th birthday. I'm thinking down the west coast of Africa, up the East, across to India, South East Asia to Australia/New Zealand. (If I'm there for my 50th -I'll be happy -may need to take a break to earn cash then - I'm an occupational therapist and ex-schoolteacher so think I might be able pick up some temporary work) then across to Alaska and down to Chile back up to Brazil -then who knows?

Would be interesting to hear how you get on with that with your new TT600RE.
It is still a heavy bike compared with the specialist bikes pared down for the job.
