Worldwide parts awailability and support for XT600/DR650 ?
Hi All,
Thinking to buy 3-4 bikes of the same model for family members to ride-around alltogether. There is 2 bikes in the list: DR650 (I like it more) and XT600-660 or XT660 Tenere. When going to decide to DR650, it is written in the forums that DR650 is not supported well about parts in the worldover like XT600 is done. I am talking especially about Middle East, Central Asia and Africa... Would like to hear your experiences and knowledge... please... Thanks a lot, |
Spare parts availability in many of these places will be non-existant, and that is regardless of bike brand or type. Even if you are lucky enough to find a Yamaha dealer, your bike will probably be the first of this kind he has ever seen in his life. Granted, there are parts that fit many models, but these you can usually find anyways even without a dealer. Most common example being bearings and the like. The bottom line in my experience: if something really breaks, it's something that will have to be shipped to you anyways :D
Now experience and mechanical knowledge is another matter. If none of you have no clue about basic maintenance of your bike (which I guess you should), then having a bike that's similar to the models popular in your travel destination, as well as a bike that's popular with other travelers that you might meet, could be advantageous. |
I can only speak for SE Asia, but the only bikes for which you are likely to find parts are things like Honda CG125, Honda Wave (100-125cc step-through) and similar models. Poor people don't ride expensive bikes.

Europe and Americas ?
Ok, there is no real differences about the parts between this two bikes, how about Europe and Americas ?

The DR650 is built in a factory in Colombia, so parts availability in Colombia should be good, although still expensive as the bike carries a $9000 USD price tag. The DR650 is not available anywhere in C. America or Mexico, so in these countries parts will need to be shipped from the US or Colombia, whatever may be easier. Hope this helps.
