Which 250cc?
 

Hey guys,

Next year I'm going on a round australia trip and want to do it on a 250cc bike. Spent ages reading through all these pages on the forums and sure it can be done.

So - which 250cc??? There's so many different ones, what one would you all recommend. It'll be long flat roads, a bit of off - road (sand), and ideally I don't want to spend a fortune buying one either. But the other thing is that I'm going to spending a lot of time of this bike, and having sat on a few here at home, it needs to be somewhat enjoyable to ride aswell! Too much to ask? :tongue_smilie:

Before I came to Europe, I had a Yamaha TTR250 Open Enduro in NZ and I had it for about a year or so of general riding on and off road.

I also toured around the South Island for several months on it. It was light, pokey, reliable and very capable off road. It had no trouble pulling me up rocky and sandy hills even though I weigh 95kgs + 25kgs of gear.

Mine was a 1993 model with 30,000kms on it and I paid $3500NZD for it and sold it for $3200 so it held value well (250's are easy to sell in NZ because of the learner restrictions).

Apart from regular oil changes (every 2500kms - the motors run quite hot, although the OE model comes with an oil cooler which will help in Oz) I never did anything to it, and it never let me down in any weather or any terrain. However the seat was mean! Get an Airhawk or similar for long days in the saddle and don't wind it up faster than 100kms/hr because they vibrate very heavily in protest.

If you're going outback then you may want to consider a bigger tank, I think 9 or 12L or so is standard (I'm not sure) but mine would do 180 - 210kms on a tank (not enough for desert).

drz250 is supposedly very reliable, I think that the KLR250 is watercooled but not very powerful, ttr250 I know nothing about and XR250 is a good all-rounder :)
