ST1300 Pan European
 

Hi

Looking at doing North Africa from UK next year (solo) :mchappy:. Is the pan going to be suitable for north Africa is it too big or would something smaller and a bit more dual purpose ( v strom/ transalp ) be more suitable for it ?

I own an '05 ST1300 Pan-European and an '05 XL650V Transalp. (BTW, my son rides a V-Strom.)

I guess it depends where you mean when you say 'North Africa'. I recently got the heads-up - from this HUBB thread (thanks fellas) - that it's now possible to catch a ferry from Venice to Egypt. I'm hoping, therefore, to take the Pan on this trip within the next year or two, as it's just the ticket for a run across to northeast Italy, then a Med cruise down to Alexandria.

However, If I were ever inclined to explore around the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, then a dual-sport would have to be the right choice.

Almost any bike can do almost any trip though, IMHO. My mind has been made up on this point ever since I've been following Peter & Kay Forwoods' travels around 193 countries on a HD Electraglide Classic. Unbelievable! Puts things into perspective, eh?

Really depends on what you mean by North Africa?

Last year my wife and I spent 4 weeks in Morocco on a fully loaded BMW K1200GT. We had a great time and only occassionally regretted not having a more "dirt worthy" steed. At the end of the day it depends on what you want to do but I wouldn't hesitate in taking an ST1300 to Morocco.

Why not...

I'm doing RTW on a 09 Goldwing starting next year.. One word of warning is the Carnet as most of Africa is 200% with eygpt at I think was 800%..

As long as you know yours and your bikes limits you should be fine.
