Serow? XT? Whats the difference?

I've been looking at the Yam XT serow and the normal XT's, whats the difference? XT's seem to be alot more common in the states, and since thats where I'll be buying it'd be good to know if its worth rooting out a serow instead (there are a few to be had)

Cheers, Joe

I don't think that there is much difference between them. I have a 2004 yamaha XT225 brazilian built model, and looking at the XT 225 'serow' model, apart from graphics and minor bodywork they appear the same. Most of the parts are interchangable. Someone on another board suggested that the brazilian built model is not as good quality, so far mine is running fine, has no rust on it and has been used throughout the British winter and done some hard trail riding. I do not know about the later 250 serow.

Hi Little Joe,

the Yamaha XT250 was built in the early/mid '80's and has nothing in common with the Serow range and is a sleeved down version of the bigger XT's.

The XT225 is licenced built in Brasil and has slight differences (mainly in the plastics, lighting etc) but uses most of the engine parts etc. As Fatal mentioned there have been comments that the Brasilian built version is of a lower quality than the Japanese one but I reckon it's only related to the paint and everyone I've seen looks on par with the Japanese spec machine.

The current XT225 is the Serow and has been in production for 20 years. It started life as a 200cc 4 stroke in a DT frame project and resulted in the lovely Serow.

The XT225 is available in many area's of the World but never officially imported into the UK but there's loads of grey/parallel imports available.

Last year Yamaha started production of the 225cc bikes replacement which resulted in the XT250 Serow. This is a totally new machine, again looking at the ethos of the original 225 cc version of a light weight chassis and a high torque yet quiet engine. I'm lucky enough to have one of the first in the UK (as this machine's only currently sold in Japan) and love it. According to the Serow owners site I'm still the only memebr with one. Just do a search over XT225 and it'll take you to the site.

Don't forget there's also the TT225 range as well, giving more ground clearance but gaining seat height!

Wow!, what a great reply, thanks!!

I'm looking at buying in the States, and the TT seems alot more availible so perhaps I'll go down that route (provided I fit on one) If not its looking like an XT. Thanks again and I'll let these boards know how I get on...
