R100 GS vs R1100 GS

I have ridden my '93 R100 RS throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It now has 120 thousand miles on it. When I travel I generally stay on paved roads, but (particularly in Mexico) you can't avoid an occassional dirt road. I generally don't seek them out.

I am planning a trip from Alaska to Tiera del Fuego for 2003. I have decided to take a bike with more range and off-road capabilities; and I am preparing for the "camping" part of the trip. I have been looking at new R1100 GSs and used R100 GSs. I am looking for views on each of these bikes. I like the R1100 because it is new, has fuel injection, and more horsepower than the R100. I like the R100 because I know the motor inside and out, I doesn't have fuel injection, and lopes along on 60 or so horsepower.

Seriously, my concern with the R1100 is having the fuel injection crash in a remote place. After all, Jimmy Lewis runs Bing carbs on his PD race bike. I have been in remote parts of Mexico with my RS and have found a guy with a lathe to make parts for me. I assume the R100 GS is an equally servicable bike. Not so sure about the R1100 however. Any thoughts out there?
