Quad bikes
 

I'm 53 about to retire and looking for adventure. I have never been on a motorbike in my life and don't know where to start never mind go on a long trip. I wondered if a quad bike might be a safer option and have tracked down a road legal QB in england. Can anyone offer me advice on the use of a QB on a long road trip, what would be a good QB to buy and where to learn how to use it. Similarly what would be a good motorbike to begin with and where can I best learn to ride one etc etc etc.

The problem i understand with quad bikes for the road is that to be registered for the road they have to below a certain power unless registered as an farm vehicle (that is very restictive).
Also a Quad bike on the road takes some learning to ride as they have no rear diff.
Take your bike test instead you could do CBT in weeks and be straight on to a real bike.

You should give a go at the CBT course: it's a good start and would help you to decide if you like riding or not. The CBT course last only one day, cost around 100 quid and is done on a 125cc bike. From there you could decide to go for the full test (need about 3 to 4 1/2 days lessons) either on a 125cc (33bhp restricted licence lasting 2 year, then no restriction) or on a 500cc for a full licence. I did it on a 125cc (as a 500cc was too heavy for me) and bought a Virago 535cc!
