Price of used KLR650 in Cananda
 

I'm checking out the option of getting a new or slightly used KLR650 in Canada for a trip down to SA as this bike seems to be the most common low priced "endurobike" in North America.

I se lot's of used KLR650's (and also quite some XR650's) in the Montreal area e.g. on www.canadatrader.com so I'm speculating on starting my journey there. Used KLR's with 5-15.000 km's are about CAD 4.500.

However I got a "on-the-road" quote on a new KLR650 from a dealer in Vancouver who wanted CAD 7.926!!! MSRP is CAD 6.499.

I would like to get a reliable figure for the total on-the-road price of a used KLR650. Can someone tell me what kind of cost I should calculate on top of the dealers prices e.g. on canadatrader.com before I'm ready to hit the streets?

The prices you see in the bike trader are typical. All such price quotes are before taxes .If you buy a vehicle new you have to pay additionally a Goods and services tax of 7% (GST) and a provincial retail tax of 8% (PST) in Ontario (rates in other provinces may differ) and the dealer may charge a small sum as a "predelivery inspection and setup fee ( don't ask me why- isn't that why tey are in business?),plus license and registration
If you buy a used vehicle you only have to add the 8% PST ,but then you or the seller will have to agree on who pays for the safety certification which cost about $30. Best to only buy a bike which has already been safetied, then you will get no surprises after you have already parted with your money .Then you have to pay at the vehicle licensing office for transferring the ownership , about $10 and the license plate for a year $47 (all Otario examples)
Additionally will be the liability insurance which is compulsory, shop around.

I would preferably buy on the westcoast but I don't se much of a used marked there ?

Living in Ontario I have no direct knowledge of used prices or availability on the west coast but I think if you do some more web search you should be able to get the Bike Trader site for that area or click on to some of the motorcycle stores there that you can find on the web too . Just explore and nose around on the sites for the different brands to get some leads.You appear to have found the Montreal sources so those in Vancouver should also be possible.

Just took my own advice and through a google found www.canadatrader.com fiddled through their selections and got to the used bikes where there were in the first 6 pages already two used KLR in Langley , a Vancouver suburb ,'04 for $5998 and '03 for $4999 , : used bike prices there are higher ? KLR more desirable there? Dicker the price down. Just some examples , you should be able to find more.

Try looking on www.craigslist.org . Wow, lots of taxes in canada. Here in montana there are no taxes and the license is permanent for as long as you own the bike. Unfortunately there are less than a million people in the whole state so the supply of used bikes is likewise limited.

A Safety Inspection only certifies that the items on a list are working and meet specification. That'll include the horn, lights, tire condition, rim trueness, brakes, steering head and swingarm bearing play...BUT...it doesn't tell you if the engine and transmission are in good operating condition. In fact, the engine doesn't even have to run to pass the safety.

If you pay the full MSRP, you can always get out of paying any set-up charges (assembly, pre-delivery expenses); usually $150 to $250.

When I bought my 2002 KLR 650, MSRP was $6199 and I got it for $5600 + $150. On top of that: 8% PST and 7% GST (soon to be 6%). Those taxes are similar to MwST (or VAT) taxes in Germany.

Don't you need a permanent address to register the motorcycle to?

You may also want to do some mods to the KLR: balancer chain adjuster mod, rear subsection frame bolts, etc.

I guess so, but I've been in contact with some other people from Denmark who bought some KLR's in Canada and they didn´t have any problems as the shop helped them with the registation of the bikes.

Would probably be the same thing in Germany if I was to buy there and ship to Canada I would have to register in Germany - don´t know if thats possible for a foreigner?
