Low down grunt
 

I've been receiving some conflicting opinions on singles vs twins again with regard to low down torque. Some guys (mainly single owners) are telling me the singles are better for mountain passes and slow going, while a few others have told me that the twins (trans alp - same cc) have better power at low revs, which one is it? My head says that the single will have more low down grunt but an informed opinion would be appreciated, thanks.

I own both. I have a 2001 MZ Black Panther with a Yamaha 660 single. And I have a 2005 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom. Both are top motors in their respective classes.

Around the city I live in the single's low rpm responce is great, but the DL650 is much more powerful once moving over 20-30mph. For trips no comparison the twin is much better, faster and only 417 dry weight. A BMW 650 weighs about the same but the DL650 is much more poweful and smoother.

PS:Oh the DL650 will wipe any single 650 off any road or pass or quater mile or top end--period.

What is also of importance is whether you plan to travel with pillion or solo. When riding two up I'd prefer a twin.

Of course the terrain you intend to ride would influence the decision. Smaller singles are usually enduro types, less wheight & lots of fun. But for long distance travelling the twins are generally more comfortable.
