KLRs & Water

Can anybody help?

I have just bought a new KLR 650 and looking through this site and
others, I see regular references to problems in the rain with the KLR
not running well. I recently rode through about a foot of water (very
slowly) and the bike stopped. Only to be pushed out (with both boots
full of water) let stand whilst I contemplated the meaning of life
for five minutes then fired straight up.

What would have caused this problem and whats the problem in the rain?

This is a fairly common and easily fixed problem. Haven't done it to mine yet, but think you can find the info on: www.dualsportnews.com
I've seen the fix somewhere and think that's the spot.

I've had a couple of KLR650s.

The CDI on the older model points contacts forward - it's not a bad idea to dress this with non-conductive electric grease, failing that pvc tape.

The side stand sensors can also give problems and are in a postion to allow water ingress - especially if cracked from flying debris - bypass and remove these - saves a lot of grief.

Presume MotoD is refering to putting a T-junction in the carb breather. Having driven a KLR through contant steams in the Yukon last year, I can tell you it works (see the vid on my site), All 4 of us on Ks did not miss a beat in the water.

Yup, the T-junction 'fix' will fix it. I had a '99 KLR that would regularly die in shallow streams. Interestingly, if I was in DEEP water, the engine would run just fine.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
