Gs Or Adventure

I amd planning a RTW and want to know whcih bike would beeter suit a journey where no extreme off road is anticipated. I have looked at the GS and GS Adventure and prefer the GS. I know that the Adventure has some improvements but is it worth the extra $ or will a R1220GS with Gobi luggage do the job. Not doing russia or africa but everywhere else in on the list.:helpsmilie:

Well, yes, there's not that much diff between the GS and the ADV. The suspension of the ADV is 2cm higher, slightly upgraded, the windshield is a bit wider, protects you better, the tank takes 10 L more, it is slightly heavier. All in all no significant difference.

IMHO the 1150 is still the more reliable bike, esp. regarding the electronics. But the 1200 is a lot lighter and ergo easier to handle.

GS or Adventure?

There are differences in the transmission, with 1st and 6th gears lower on the Adventure. I rather like the tall 6th gear on my 1150gs for economy, but at the same time really dislike the tall 1st gear.

My solution is a lower ratio final drive, in my case a 3:0 (stock is a 2:82). As I have just purchased the final drive, I can't give you a ride report, but I do know that a number of people have done it and some have gone with an even lower final drive from an 850gs(?). I really think this will make a huge difference in the rideability of the bike. There are several reports on the Advrider forum, you can find them using Google.
