DT125 in the DR?

I'm used to a 225cc four-stroke, and a 650 was my ride for a while, but now that I'm going to visit the Dominican Republic, all that's available is a Yamaha DT125 stroker.

Am I in for a heap of trouble as far as distance touring goes? I have NO experience with 2-strokes so I don't know about mileage or reliability issues, etc. I hear they are rugged machines though, and any backwater mechanic can fix them. Anyone have experience here?

Hi Emil
You can put your mind at rest as the dt 125 is a good reliable bike. You dont say if you will buy new or second hand, as buying other peoples handywork is always a worry. However the 125 2 stroke is very cheap to get running well again (compared to a modern 4 stroke). The limitations are with lugage as 10kg is about the limit before the frame and handling suffer. Just keep the 2 stroke oil filled up and let the bike take you places a bigger bike would never let you go.
During 18000km around africa, my suzuki 125, hasnt failed me yet, and the engine is still un worked on, so enjoy.
