dr 650

Decided on the dr 650 for a green laneing and hopefully a bit of travelling.
My question is is there a paticular year that is better than another?I am thinking regarding specs and availabiltity of after market stuff etc.
I am on a budget and dont mind a bit of fettling.....although at the mo am struggling to find a decent dr in the uk!!!
Thanks Dave

You want the SE model, produced from about '96 onwards. Don't touch the older ones. Also, check out the topic about "engine grenade".

There were 2 years, '98-'99 I think, that had starter gear problems.

As said only DR650SE (SP46A) Preferably the latest from 2004 onwards with the new cylinder foot gasket. Or check if it was replaced with the new one at some stage (steel gasket - The pieces with the brass rivets holding the layers together protrude)

Other than the starter gear without torque limiter (introduced 1998 and scrapped for the 1996 / 1997 version in 1999) and the cylinder foot gasket there were no changes. All aftermarket stuff fits all bikes from 1996 onwards.
