I am planning to ride a bike through Central America. I am looking for recommendations on the bike. Preferably, I would like to keep it under $5,000 US but I am flexible on this point. My biggest reason for keeping the price the low is the potential for just ditching it somewhere if I get into a bind. I am well above average height so comfort is a factor. Being able to find spare parts weighs heavily on my mind. Equipment and do-it-yourself book recommendations are also appreciated. Actually, I'll take any advice I can get. I'm sure all this has been covered before so if anyone wants to simply direct me to the relevant thread that would be great.

Well since you put it like that Neophyte, there is a search facility over on the left of this page in the purplish "forum" section and that will bring up any thread that contains whichever key word you care to research.

Alternatively, you can just scroll back in this same forum, because your query comes along at quite regular intervals: once you have read some of the mammoth earlier threads, you will probably have some more detailed questions or even a short list of bikes that you might consider.
