BYO bike VS. buy what you can get on the ground (cheap!)

Hi there,

Im interested peoples experience with buying inexpensive used bikes once on the ground at your start point, and selling them on arrival at your destination. This instead of freighting your bike from home.

Im very interested in hearing from people with experience doing it this way. When does this method work? When does it fall down? Why? What are the less obvious pro’s and con’s of doing it this way? Is this whole concept false economy?

Relating to me specifically, I want to buy in Vladivostok, and ride to London, without a Carnet (no countries I travel through require one). Is this possible? Will I be slugged large fee’s at borders I will never see again?

Any input is very much appreciated :-)
