Buying used bikes, imported from USA to Canada

Hi.

I'm new here, and to riding, and I'm currently looking for my first bike. I'm fairly firmly decided on a KLR650, so now it's just a matter of finding a good deal.

So I found what appears to be a good deal, but it's a used bike that the seller has purchased in the USA and imported to Canada to re-sell here. They seem like a reputable business, and they obviously do a lot of this importing reselling stuff,.. but I wonder are there any "red-tape" pitfalls or hazards that I need to wary of when purchasing a bike imported from USA to Canada?

I wouldn't want to buy it and find out later there are goofy obscure rules that apply to bikes like these that I don't know about. For instance (and I'm just making these up as hypothetical goofy stuff) "Oh, you can't insure that here", or "Oh, you can't cross the border with that."

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank from Lorne, the newbie,..

Buying an imported bike

It seems to becoming more and more common here in Alberta, I have a couple of aquantences that have bought American motorcycles with no issues beyond insurance inspections and bringing them up to Canadian standards like daytime running lights. I'd call your insurance broker and see what they need to have and the costs associated with that. Best of luck!

Make sure the bike has been inspected and registered in Canada, then it is no problem; suggest you make the vendor do that as it is quite a lot of hassle. Presumably if the bike is already in Canada, that has been done.

Resale value of imported bikes is less than for Canadian bikes, so you may not be getting the bargain it looks like.

Just sayin'......

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
