Buying a motorbike in Kathmandu

Hello everyone,

I just registered to this forum and here is my first question...

We want to buy two new motorbikes in Kathmandu later this year, one for me and one for my (female) travelling partner.
This year we want to travel to Sikkim but later we also want to go to the Indian Himalaya, Tibet, Pakistan and China.

Now the question(s)…
1. do we have any other choice than buying an Enfield?
2. when buying an Enfield shall we opt for a 350cc or 500cc?
3. which (Enfield) model do you guys recommend (we are thinking about a Bullet Electra 5S or Thunderbird)?

Any tips are more than welcome.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, while in Kathmandu I saw lots of XL125's and 185's, some XL/XR 250's as well as Enfields. No idea how expensive or the avalibility though. If your going to India though I'd stick with the Enfield as you don't see the XR/XL's in India.

Cheers Fish

Get the lean burn bike, either 500 or 350. these are all new engines with new tooling and modern materials. Runs much longer servicing intervals than the old 1950's models. Failing that get one with electric start, these have a significanly stronger crankcase and bottom end.

But in the end, properly serviced and ridden withing their design limits these can be reliable bikes. I had a 350 for years used mostly for hard dirt riding.

Hey Icarus,

fantastic idea, buying a bike in Kathmandu, because I'm having the same idea! But the problem is, that there aren't many good (Japanese) bikes around here just the Enfields.

Please let me know what you guys ended up doing/buying?
As I'm still on the hunt for a good bike that can take me from Nepal to Germany.

:confused1:If anyone has some tips please let me know.

Thanks a lot. Phil
