Having toured on both, no question the BMW is the (vastly) superior bike. Personally if I had only £1500 to spend I would go with a Japanese machine.

Which one bc?
I was more inclined to go for the enfield.
The simple nature ofthe bikes make them suitable for home maintenance

I've had both and it's like comparing a curry with fish and chips, depends what you fancy.

The F650: Go anywhere, do anything. Cruise at motorway speeds. Modern service intervals. Tyres (tubes in tubeless) are a PITA and has design issues with waterpump and reg/rec that need care but aren't a killer if you catch them in time.

500 Bullet: Fantastic to ride on the B-roads, makes you think, makes you smile. Simple to keep going (no need to play, it's not mechano, ignore the owners club fools who'll want you to take it to bits, just keep changing the oil every 2000 miles). Doesn't do motorways.

Similarities: Both have areas of utterly crap build quality and the paint falls off. Parts are cheap and plentiful. Both can do rough roads. Both have good range due to low fuel consumption. Both do pillion or luggage but not both.

If I was adding a bike to the ones I have I'd take the Bullet. If I could only have one bike and it had to be one of these, it would have to be the F650 just because there are days I need to knock off 200 miles of motorway and seven hours for the B-roads aren't available. One bike of any choice I wouldn't pick either there are bikes (Bonnevilles, XT600's, ER5's, XBR's etc.) I've had dealings with that tick a lot more multi-use boxes.

Enjoy whatever you choose.

Andy

The Enfield in question is a 350.
The BMW is the R650ls flat twin

The R bikes are better made than F's, but you are talking what, 25 years old?

I run a 1984 K100, but I'm still calling Japanese 500 as more bang for your buck.

Choice of the two? I'd pick the BMW but only because it will cruise fast enough to do stay with the trucks on the motorway.

The R65LS is a good compromise. Some classic charm, very easy maintenance and enough performance for modern roads. If you'd be happy with the performance of the 350 (about the same as a CG125) for your needs then go for it - more involving I should think.

For what its worth i have a 500 Classic Bullet and an F650GS single. In their own way they are both very worthy bikes. For reliability you cant beat the Beemer. It is rugged with few faults. Can do fast enough, can do rough enough. Returns low 70s mpg. The Bullet needs far more regular tinkering due in part to poor build quality, broad tolerances and part very old tech, but is possible to repair by the roadside with a leatherman and some old wire! It does low 80s mpg with bigger jets, tiny air filter and straight through pipe. It can cruise at 65 (will do faster but doesnt have brakes to speak of). It can also do surprisingly rough!

It it had to be one it would be the Beemer.

I have a Honda Transalp too. Less character, better bike!
