I'm travelling through South America in a years time. I own a Dakar but it seems a bit cramped. The KLR seems a bit bigger? I dunno? I kinda want a big beemer but I still want to get off road. Any suggestions?

I'm about to buy a Dakar, I think they are just right. The bigger Beemers would be good if you are doing a lot of long roads where the big engine would keep you smiling but once you're off road it could be a bit toilsome with such size and weight.
The KLR would also be great I think thought they say they're not as comfy or robust.

I looked into this same decision for my planned RTW. The KLR seems to have weaknesses in regard to carrying a load. Many have said it can be "beefed up" with better fasteners in the rear section. I'm favoring the big BMW, either a GSadv (heavy) or a 90s 1000GSPD.

I rode to Deadhorse Alaska last June on a '03 KLR. I'm 6'5" and weigh about 325. Will be doing a Deadhorse to the tip of South America next year. So far the KLR has been a good ride. I did the bolt upgrades for the rearend just to be on the safe side. Price was a big consideration (in case I have to leave the bike), as was ease of repair. Also rode the bike to Copper Canyon last October with a couple of friends from the local area that also have KLRs. Talked to Grant and he mentioned that whatever bike I chose for the ride make it as bullet proof as possible by paying attention to all the little details. That is my winter project.

Take care,

John
