Newbie Brit

Just found this great site with so much to see. I'm soaking up all your enthusiasm and learning. Rode push-bikes for years, never sat on one with a motor before but, at 52, reckon now's a good time to put my feet up and take things more leisurely.

I'll be buying in the UK, after getting my licence over there - then I'm off!

Get a UK licence (preferably) is the first thing. Though I'm currently living near Tel Aviv Israel, with my parents retired to Limassol, Cyprus.

Cyprus is a 40-minute flight and the country has no Highway Code, the Cyprus/Euro test involves a half-hour ride on your own machine. In my case it's the classic 'chicken or the egg' situation since my preferred ride is the BMW F800ST of which there appear none over there to buy first and bikes can not be rented for the test. But frankly I don't think such a test would improve my bike skills, so I'd prefer to get a UK licence. And to get one of those involves a return to the UK with the theory test pre-booked and then move on to getting the licence a.s.a.p through the Direct Access route.

Touring-wise I'd like a long, slow tour around the back roads of Europe without a time limit so I can really get to see things properly. No weekend 1000kms dash for me thank you.

Welcome to the HUBB!
ViaMichelin has been a great help to me planning my route around back roads, the roads with the green lines are scenic, mostly very very nice!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
