A Calgary guy with a big plan

Hello all,

I joined HU to meet people—in person and online—who will help me plan my big trip. I want to ride from Calgary, Alberta to Brazil in 2014 and attend some World Cup of soccer games. Heard of anyone else with such a plan?

I've owned three Gold Wings over 30 years and have travelled around North America fairly extensively. Indeed, I'd like to ride to the east coast of Canada to see the Maritimes and Newfoundland in 2012. So long trips aren't new to me.

Also, I lived in Ecuador for a few years and travelled in Colombia, Bolivia and Brazil too. Learning to speak Spanish is a skill I picked up along the way, along with learning the culture. (Portuguese might be a bridge too far!)

What will be new to me is the bike I'll choose and the route I'll take. I've thought about both to some degree, but I know I've got lots to learn. And that'll be fun because of all the great people I know I'll meet as I move along.

So, I've already signed up for August's Canwest meeting in Nakusp, BC, bought the Achievable Dream DVDs, and am looking forward to the next few years of planning. Hope to meet and learn from you!

Hey RD,

Welcome to HU. Sounds like a great plan to ride down to Brazil for the World Cup, I haven't heard any one else mention it previously but no doubt there will be a bunch of people doing the same thing. I bumped into a few folks last year in Africa riding/driving from Europe to South Africa for the World Cup. It's an interesting combination of travellers and football/soccer mad fans out for an adventure. Have fun planning and look forward to meeting you in Nakusp.

hello Calgary Guy with a big plan
The nakusp meeting is a good step and so are the breakfasts that Ekke and Audrey plan every couple of months here in Calgary or Bragg Creek.

I have been from Calgary to Central America on my f650 gs twice now and am planning to go to Brazil in a year or so.
Hope to meet up with you.

Cal

Welcome!

Hi Richard,

I saw that you signed up for Nakusp, I'm sure you'll like it as there are lots of people to talk to who won't think you're nuts!

As Cal mentioned the Calgary HU community gets together every now and then for a breakfast. If you join the Calgary HU community you'll get an e-mail when we organize the next one. Just look on the left under "Communities".

Very jealous of your plans. You're definitely in the right place. All the best.

Thanks for the shout out and welcome, all. Ekke, I'd love to join you for breakfast and meet some other Calgary HU people. I'll hop over there soon and sign up.

I hope it's okay I'm bikeless at the moment. I got cutoff, dropped the Wing and scratched it up to the point I just don't have the wherewithal to repair. Sold it for parts, sadly.

Cheers,

Richard

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
