New Chick From Southern California

Hi there,

I've been lurking for some time now. Finally got up the courage to register. I ride a Ninja 650R and a Yamaha TTR 230. Looking to maybe sell my TTR for a dual sport, or keep it and just get myself a dualsport. Since I'm in California, I cant just take my TTR out on the roads here. So, I am considering a DRZ 250, sat on a few and know already I'm going to have to do some kind of lowering or seat shaving or some good old fashioned leg pulling before I take it out. I am planning a 2 week adventure in Baja for September. Can't wait!

Great site and happy to finally join.

:welcome:Welcome to the site Vroomer. That's a nice part of the world you're in.

Don't rush to get a big heavy dual sport bike think nice light road legal trail bike. Try the XT250 or Kawasaki super sherpa they've got nice low seats straight out of the box. I love my XT250 it does everything I want from trail a bike.

Check out these threads...

Good luck. :thumbup1:

In Baja you can ride your non California legal bike on the roads there ... as long as you have head and tail lights. (bring your registration for the bike) I think your TTR230 has lights, no? I did 1500 miles of mostly dirt on my green sticker only XR250R. Fantastic. Only as far as Mulege' but lots of great trails.

Also check out the Kawasaki KLX250S (the new one, came out in '08 I believe). Super Sherpa looks good too, but heavier than your TTR, but maybe better on road and for carrying stuff? Try them all!

A more expensive option might be the Yamaha WR250R (street legal) expensive but a good performer.

Lots of ways to lower bikes:
Lowering links (like Kouba links or others can bring it down about 2 inches)
Trimmed down seat (last option)
raise fork tubes in triple clamps.

Two weeks in Baja should be awesome. Hopefully you are going with someone who knows the good routes. There are many options. Watch out for Pre-Runners. (buggies)

I was away for a bit, but now I'm back.
Anyway I've decided on the KLX 250. I will need to lower it some. I put my TTR up for sale, God I can't wait for it to sell. Although it will be a sad day to see it go. But, can't get the new bike until I sell the old.

I've been riding in Baja since I was about 10 I am familiar with a lot of the trails especially up around the southern San Felipe area. My Dad lives there and I try to go every couple of months, or when ever SCORE has a race. I am missing this years 500 though. Too bad.

Anyway thanks for all of your suggestions.
