Talking Just Planning

Hi All

I will be starting my "Americas" odyssey in April/May 2014.

Really doing the base planning now but looking at about 18 months to go from Alaska to Chile in "chilled" mode. The trip is more important than the time frame. Plan to camp out mostly and will be looking to buy the bikeb (Kawasaki 650 KLR) and kit in USA then sell in Brazil before flying back home to Johannesburg South Africa.

Have been checking out the HU threads as a visitor for some time now and it seems this used to be a viable option. Not so sure now as many threads viewed were somewhat dated.

Anyone have some current input on this?

Much appreciated and Happy biking

Yes you can but I have given up traking the laws there done by the state so there are 50 of them and they change around.

Where and how to sell you need to ask someone else. Think it can be done I do not know if you can in Brazil.

As you know they are many post about buying a bike in the USA and taking a trip. There is one that may help http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...sier-usa-59241

But for the most part to be legal and cross the border you need.
The Bike
A plate on the back of the bike (in the USA a new bike will get a paper plate good for 30 days and the real steal plat will be mailed to you or you may pick it up when you register the bike depends on state)
Insurance (it is good in Canada and the USA)
Registration comes with the plate
Title mailed to you most of the times but you can pick it up in some states.
licence for motor bike
A mailing address

Now the thing is some state got it that they can force you to live in the state to get Registration the Title by showing proof of where you live like a power bill in your name or instate licence others do not. Even that may not stop you getting a bike (as this is on new bikes) Used come with a plate and there may be ways the seller can help you out.

You will need to look up the state and the requirements for registering a motorcycle.
This may help California DMV Motorcycle Registration Forms & Requirements at DMV.org: The DMV Made Simple

May work for other states as well.

Hi DLBiten

Thanks for feedback. I have family in Florida so will get them to check things out closer to the time. Physical address therefore not a problem but proof may be. Whether to buy new or second hand will depend on the availability of good second hand KLR's when I get there.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
