Ola!, I have a crazy plan :D

Ola,

I am a 25 year old South African born (Austrian family) adventure rider living in Cape Town with a plan....

Have been riding around in South Africa for a year an a bit, recently woke up with a crazy idea to ride across Africa into Europe over a year or so.

Below is a post from my local riding forum

Quote:
Ok so i woke up with a crazy idea yesterday and have started playing around with it, reading asking questions etc.

The is that I would spend a year riding through Africa (or Europe) with a bike a laptop and a satellite modem so i can connect remotely to the office and work.

I have managed to find a small usb satellite modem that has coverage over 90% of Africa (waiting on costs of data transfer) the unit itself is $2950 which I think is a small price to pay for that kind of freedom.

Had a chat with my boss about the idea and he likes it! Provided I train an assistant up to deal with office stuff..... getting ahead of myself, let me explain what I do for a living. I am a sysadmin tech guy (head of I.T - title I dont like) as such 95% of all the work I do I can do from any where via the net.

now Considerations would be:

What bike?
My Xcountry isn't gonna cut it in terms of fuel range (though my auxiliary tank project would solve that) and luggage capacity (though even than can be solved)

1200GSA?

Africa or Europe?

Poll added

- Europe would be easier as I am Eu citizen and can easily travel across boarders etc.
- Africa is closer and I like her, though political stability and aids etc etc should be taken into account

What to pack

What else?

so like I'd only plan on doing this in a year or so but would like to start working out logistics and stuff just to see if it is doable.

Advice and suggestions plz!

Needed:
  • MX Boots
  • Neck brace
  • knee brace's
  • touring jacket
  • toolkit
  • medical kit
Todo:
  • First aid training - extensive not plasters and crap
  • Learn to service my bike - thoroughly
Any advice as to where on this forum I should post re planning an advice for my plan please let me know

Welcome aboard

I would suggest that you start off by going onto the hubb and explore there. I think that you will find many of your questions have already been discussed in great detail under the relevant headings.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
