Hello from Tasmania
 

Hi everybody,

I live in Tasmania and ride a Wee-Strom. I am fairly new to touring, only got my Strom in March. :) So I mainly ride around this beautiful island (so far).

But I want to tour around Australia and NZ in the future and hope that I will manage to travel South America some time in the future. :thumbup1:

Hey Anna, welcome to Horizons. I have a 1000 Strom and love it. Did a 5 week ride down your way in January this year and had a great time. You are blessed with some of the best biking roads in the country. Give us a yell when you head up this way.

I have to agree that Tassie's roads are just awesome! Can't wait for the srping to come to get out there more often and for longer trips.
Since my husband doesn't ride himself :eek3: I had (so far) not enough opportunities to go for multiple day trips.:rolleyes2: But next summer he will just have to come along. :cool4:

I live in Hobart, so I ride a lot down south.
I am planning to do the tour around Tassie somewhen next summer. :scooter:

Been meaning to tour Tassie, heard many good things about the roads and locals down there. However it will have to wait until I return from Europe (if I return...). :thumbup1:

Give me a hoi when you are closer to planning. If you head down to Hobart you can stay with us for a couple of nights and I can show you around!

Hi everybody!
I am planning a trip around Tassie later on the year hopefully around mid October.
I would appreciate any tips/advise anyone can provide as this is my first ever bike trip to anywhere other than within 3 hours of home at the NSW Central Coast.
I am on a cruiser and plan to stay on seal roads where possible and would like to head west from Devenport traveling unticlockwise around the island. Is this possible on seal roads?
I also plan to camp and at this stage have allowed 2-3 weeks for the entire trip including the ride from the Central Coast to Melbourne, across to Devenport, around Tassie, back to Melbourne and ride back home.

Hi Fabrizio,

yes, you can go around Tassie without leaving sealed roads (even though that means you will miss out on some fantastic scenery :innocent:).

From Devenport I would start exploring the state's North (Pengui, Stanley...), next on my list would be Cradle Mountain (if you like a bit of bush walking plan 2 nights), from there via Zeehan to Strahan, from Straha via the highlands (be prepared for COLD) to Derwent Bridge, from there probablz towards Hobart and then the ride up the East Coast.

There is so much to see that it's a bit hard to decide. But my favourite riding roads down South are Tasman Peninsular, up the East Coast (Lake Leake Road!!!) and the ride along the Channel Highway down South (Kingston, Kettering, Woodbridge, Middleton, Gordon, Cygnet, Huonville).

There are plenty of camp grounds all over Tassie and in October you shouldn't have any trouble getting a spot for your tent.

Thanks for that, yes I knew I would be missing on some beatiful unspoil spots by not leaving the seal roads. I'll have to play by ear and if the weather is ok I might still be able to manage some dirt roads if they're in good condition.
So do you think that allowing about 1 to 1/12 weeks to travel around the island would be enough?

I think around 10 days is a good start. :)

You can also stay one (or two) nights with us in Hobart and I can show you a bit round down south (if it's on a weekend since I have to work during the week). :thumbup1:

You might be able to try some dirt on the East coast since the weather is usually more stable on that side of the island.

Yeah, the name is an old Roman name, although I'm not Italian. My grandfather was.
I was actually born in Argentina but have call Oz home for the past 25 yrs.

I am actually German, we moved to Tassie 3 years ago (and call in home now). But I am so in love with Italy that I had to ask. Have spend many holidays on Sardegna... :Beach:

You are most welcome to stay with us. We have a nice big garage for the bike and plenty of room.

Hey, I am currently designing a building for a client who was telling me the other day he was originally from Sardegna.

My grand dad was born in Porto Recanato, near Rome apparently?

Anyway, I really appreciate the offer to visit and will defenatly give you a buzz when I'm in the island.

Hi Guys,

you all seem to have riding knowledge of Tasmania, i hope you dont mind if I pick your brains a bit...

A few of us have planned to go riding in Tasmania for about 10 days from the 18th of December 2010 onwards - sticking to dirt roads. We are competent riders, and have done a two month, 18,000kms journey around Australia (The Hard Way Round). We plan to be riding WR 250's and 450's and be completely self sufficient - we are happy to camp. We have heard many comparisons between the East Coast and the West Coast, and we have been told by many to avoid the West Coast due to the rain and mud.

Could you please give us some more information? If we have 10 days, what would be the best route?
