Greetings from Thailand

Hi all!

Having heard about HU a few years ago - I think it was while backpacking in Mongolia in 2004 - I've had the occasional look at the site. So I guess my registration here was actually overdue.

Right now, I'm in Thailand and will spend the winter in SE-Asia. Come April, I'll be back in my hometown near Stuttgart, Germany for the Summer. Having had no motorbike for over a decade :frown: I got me a BMW F650Dakar a couple of years ago and finally did my first big trip this year: 12500km, 69 days, 20 counties in Eastern/Southeastern Europe. Everything worked out well, much better than expected. No problems to speak of, neither with the people nor with the bike. Nevertheless, once back in Germany I felt it was time to go large. So I traded the F650 in and picked up a R1200GSA :thumbup1:

The original plan getting a passage to Argentina this October didn't work out. Grimaldi was fully booked for the rest of the year. So I'm now hanging out in Asia again. Without my bike, alas. So now plan B is on: once back in Germany by April next year I'll head down Italy and may return along the eastern side of the Adriatic. This 'll be the warm-up for the big trip, the Americas, south to north.

This time I already have the booking with Grimaldi I'll leave Hamburg for BsAs late July, will arrive a month later. That's still a bit early for Patagonia, so I plan to do Southern Brazil and Paraguay first. Anyway, the whole trip should take about 2 years, so I should be in Alaska in Summer 2012. Who knows what happens till then. I might go back to Europe or ship the bike to Australia and return via Asia. If the latter option works out it might take 5 years. Now you know.

I still haven't figured out all the paperwork and what modifications are necessary. If I can't find all the information needed I might start picking your brains :innocent:

Hi buebo,

I thought you might be on HU too. How are things back home? Freezing cold, I hope :stormy: Here in Thailand it's like this of course: :Beach:

Was great to have run into you in the Balkans. Still remember my only night in a tent on the whole trip :cool4:.

Cheers, Frank
p.s. sorry, couldn't pm you. Don't have 5 posts yet.
