Greetings from Melbourne, Australia

Hey everyone.

Just signed in to this forum to help me plan a trip I'm looking to do at the end of 2013. It looks like this is a great place to learn.

My idea is to leave with a friend I met on a recent backpacking trip (he is dutch) from somewhere in Canada, and move all the way down to Ushaia.

We are both very inexperienced riders, and we're looking to learn as much as possible before our trip.

Anyway, its great to be here and I look forward to all your input!

Hi and welcome

Starting in Canada is fine, hope you go north first to Prudoh Bay, that is the northern end of the PanAm Hwy, and from there to Ushuaia is a long way, but most people do it in about 5 months or more working with the seasons

Some people take a few years though, so depends on what you want to see and experience along the way.

Choice of bike will be your first hurdle.

If you need any first hand info you are welcome to peruse my site, I started south from Prudoh Bay in late August 2009, phew that long ago already!

Cheers
TS

G'day

Welcome to HU,

Always nice to hear there are more Australian Adventures out there.

I did that trip (and a little bit more) last year but the other way around. If you want to ask any questions PM me, or if you want a nice ride out for the day come up to Heathcote in rural Victoria and say hello.

Chrispy.

Hi and welcome.
I'm also a new rider with big motorcycle travel plans starting in 2013. Also from Melbourne as well :)

Thanks for the replies and advice!

I'll be doing more lurking than posting I think for the next few months, getting my plans in order. Closer to my departure date I'll be sure to post a blog.

Thanks again.

I was also a relatively inexperienced rider (especially on the roads) when I started my trip from Lima, Peru and started heading north...I have survived up until Honduras so far so things are looking good. You are going to have a ball!!! The more comfortable you are on your bike and with your own riding ability the better...some roads and drivers in south and central America will really test your reflexes :wink2: best of luck organising!

Hey mate, what sort of bike are you on? Are you camping or staying in hostels?

I'm also going to be in Canada for the winter season (Fernie, BC) from November 2013. I'll be sans motorbike at that stage but we should still catch up - maybe I'll follow you south after the winter season!

Welcome to HU

Hi, we've just done that journey in reverse to what you plan. We left Melbourne last Sep't and still cruising Canada and the US. If you need any advice don't hesitate to ask. Plenty of people willing to help here but our site is aussiesoverland.com.au if that can help.
