New to the HUBB, and in the pre-planning phase of a PanAm ride with my brother, mid-2011. I've been soaking up as much info from the HUBB as I can, and sharing it with my brother and family. Loads of knowledge here, and we're very grateful for the sharing from others and hope to make many a friends in this adventure we call life!
Tentatively we're planning KLR 650s, riding from CO to MI, then up to Fairbanks onto Prudhoe Bay where we'll start out "PanAm" ride. Yeah we're adding a little, but what better way to learn our communications with one another, the bike, and prepare than to do a little jaunt on the way :)

I look forward to the interaction, sharing of ride experiences and typical stuff from a BB and specifically what I can learn about the PanAm ride and more on the KLR650.

The KLR is a grate bike for the job a little buzzy at highway speeds and there are some bits you may want to replace before you go but even stock it can get the job done and has for many people.

Something you may want to look at is going to a HU meeting there is one in Colorado and California if you are looking for a bit of a shake down or you can do both.

I do not know how much you know about your bike or the trip as we people that that have never ridden before and people with millions of miles on the clock. From "I got a bike to day how dose it work?" to the people that really did wright the book on overland riding.

DL, I am checking my work schedule this week in hopes of making the CO meeting, however my brother won't be making one for a while since he's heading over to Afghanistan next month for 15months as a contractor.
I have been visiting both sites you've linked, and a couple others, countless hours already in research on mods needed, recommended and then niceities. Like, Subframe bolt upgrade, doohickey, and the list goes on. On paper I've already racked up $5k on modifications, equipment and gear, but I'm sure theres quite a bit I've left out. All wrench work will be performed from myself. Although I haven't worked on a KLR specifically, I've been wrenching on bikes for a while and thus far with the required mods I haven't run into a problem thinking of doing them. Still working on the valve adjustment bit, which will be a royal PITA on the road I'm sure. Thanks for the welcome, hope to continue learning a lot from here.
