External links .................

................ by which, I refer to postings that contain links to other than the HU website.
Personally, I can live with them when made to websites - neigh, they are indispensable because HU is not alone and there are other websites which contain information that cannot be replicated in here. I have in mind highly specialised fora e.g. one-make sites for specific vehicle manufacturers and models of their vehicles.

However, I am coming across more than a few threads in here that link to Facebook. Speaking purely on a personal basis that is where I lose interest and stop reading because I don't use it.
I recognise that Facebook won't go away any time soon (though it could fall out of favour, like myspace) so ..... .......... well, I don't know ....... what do you think?? Put the whole of the HU on Facebook?

Question

I check out Facebook on a daily basis. I taught overseas for a few years, so I have friends I worked with who are now spread out around the globe, and Facebook makes it very easy to stay in touch and see how they are doing.

Some people complain about privacy and other issues, but others will only see whatever you choose to post. If you don't want people to see it - don't post it.

I'm not sure what the complaint is... that people are sometimes posting their trip photos and travel stories to Facebook? I can't say I've seen too many such posts.

Grant,
Thanks, that is reassuring because I will never be using Facebook (unless I ever turn to politics, at which point "never say never").

By no means a complaint Bruce; just an observation posted in the site feedback because Grant has been asking for feedback.

From memory, I have noticed links to Facebook used for:-
1. People who have a facebook page for a motorcycle club/association of people interested in riding, or similar interest.
2. Recommended repair shops, with a name given that can be found in facebook.
3. Individual signature blocks used in the HUBB - presumably to a blog or suchlike.

I remember all of these simply because I have read the posts as far as such links and then gone looking for something else to read.

So, that is my feedback; such links don't work for me.

Grant,
I've just seen a link in use within the HUBB to "facebook for HU"
Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travel | Facebook

I guess the policy has changed since Mar 12?

Javier is correct - we use FB, because loads of people live there, but HU will never be only on FB.

Excellent to hear! I'm sure facebook has its place, but I never use it, so it's good to hear (again) that HU will retain its original identity - and excellent it is too!

Keep up the excellent work, Grant (and Susan!).

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
