Visitor Message vs Private Message?...

:taz:I just missed a VM from a member that needed help.

What is the differnce between a PM & a VM?

Why do we need both?

Is there anyway to get notified when we get a VM?

I just sent a wordy VM, I'd like to post the text in a forum, where do we find our sent VM's.

What good really are VM's? We have a forum that is public & PM's that are private, plus we can (not) send &\or recieve eMails. Finally, we have communities. It just seems to be another gadget to keep track of, IOW, it seems like a hassle.

Thanks for such a great site.

I have just spent 20 minutes sending a detailed VM to mfbx8ds6.

It seems as though all my text is gone. Is there a way to retrieve it?

PS - I am not shouting, I pasted his username & now bold seems to be permanently on. sorry

Hi,

VM's kinda lose me too.

Difference is that VM's are public - all can read them. To find them, click a user name and View Profile. You can even do it for yourself! :)

Notification - it's below your username in the Welcome username box. :)

Welcome...
You last visited...
Your notifications... # (of notifications of all types)

click "your notifications" and you'll see all that's of interest to you.

And the only reason VM's are there is because it came with the software, vBulletin, and it's more hassle to take it out than leave it! :) (EVERY mod is a big hassle when upgrade time comes.)

hope that helps!

Good fix on the bold :)

Retrieve - no, sorry. Don't know what happened, but a tip - ANY time you're doing a long detailed post on ANY site do this:
ctrl-A, ctrl-C = select all, copy to the clipboard -

then hit submit. Learned the long hard way over many years... :(

Thanks for the info, Grant. Ah, I see you have been able to recover my message. Thanks, again. I should know that anytime I type beyond a few lines that I should type it in notepad then paste it to the forum when I am ready.

Since it appears that there is no notification option, I'll probably turn VM's off after I give a little time for a response. I see lot's of new options due to the upgrade a lot don't really understand friends either. I have always considered all the folks on the HUBB to be my friends. :)

By the way, I really like the new visual look, easier on the eyes, classic while being warm & friendly. Good work.

Grant,

You basically do this site pro bono from what i can tell. I am a designer (front end only, thank heavens) as well. I have a pro bono poster for a friend's band, a super cheap (under paid) website for a friend's business on my current plate, plus a charity website that I have been planning to get off the ground for years. When on earth can we get time to ride?

The warm nostalgic travel stamped background interacts perfectly with the cool color scheme in front and the torn paper look to the interface bg brings it all together. The way the navigation bar breaks the foreground integrates the site look at a very intelligent and subtle visual level.

The old look served its purpose as well. The hubb has always been a place we come for facts, not entertainment. The hubb is very compact, with little of the fluff that is so common on internet forums. While it may be a stretch to assert that the hubb has saved lives (though, I believe it may have), it has certainly saved trips for many that have been in dire straight, and thus changed lives. It certainly has been essential in transforming my life. I have accomplished trips of (most other folk's) lifetimes that are now a matter of course for me. Trips that I likely would not have dared to attempt w/o the kindly assistance/reassurance of my fellow hubb members. And that, my friend, remains more substantial than some braggartly trip report for never doer's on any other entertainment site.
;)

So there you have it, the hubb is, and shall remain, the best place to find assistance for those of us that actually do it/live it. Here is where dreams and fruition collide. Plus now, the HU is not only the most informative, but also, the best looking, adv moto site on teh webbernets.

thx again

ps-- I cut and pasted/saved this before I posted. :smartass::smartass::smartass:

Pro bono - sadly no, we have to make money from HU or we starve. It's a VERY full time job for the two of us, and has been for many years. We have a couple of very part time helpers, and loads of volunteers to help run the events around the world, and incredibly helpful moderators on the HUBB. Without their help we couldn't do it at all. Other than that it's just us!

Thanks a lot for the nice comments, they're much appreciated! The site update has been a long time coming, (two years in the planning including a disaster last year) but we're very pleased that it's finally here. A great deal of thanks goes to our Design Team and all our readers for their input to making it better. We have a long way to go yet though! :)

I had no idea that a forum of this volume could produce sufficient income for two. I'm glad to hear you have managed to make the hubb into a viable business model. I'll try and click through to the sponsors more often.

PS -- thx, for the like. I don't think I have ever been "liked" on the internet before.:blush:

Does this mean I am supposed to wear your class ring or something.:blushing:

Just put an HU sticker on your bike! ;)

viable- only just, and it really needs to be better. If we didn't have lots of good credit we couldn't do it. And of course don't forget it's not just the forum/HUBB, but also the HU Meetings around the world, and the DVD series.

So yes, please click through to the advertisers and see what they have to offer - you never know, it might be something amazing! All our advertisers all about motorcycle travel, so even if you don't take a tour for instance, you might find out about some fantastic places to go and see on your own.
