Spam email addresses

Hi Grant,

We are currently getting huge amount of spam email and website addresses signed up to our HU Blog. It means we have to go through all of them every new blog update and delete the spam addresses and keep the OK addresses.

Any way of stopping this?

How about making it so you have to sign up as HU member before you can add your address to recieve blog updates?

Anyone else having this problem? or is just me....

John

Hi John,

Yes, sorry, we know and are working hard to correct it - we have ourselves deleted literally thousands of email addresses from the various blogs, including yours, and they keep coming in. We are working on a whole new blog system hopefully within a few weeks that will solve the problem.

It seems to be getting worse, so we may in the meantime remove the capability to sign up completely. We can do that on yours anytime, just let me know.

Sorry, the scum are getting worse all the time - I spend a LOT of time fighting them.

Grant

Thanks Grant, much apprecited if you could remove ability to sign up to our blog just for a while until its all sorted. I think we all appeciate your efforts and realise you are overworked and underpaid for the service you offer here on HU.

We are in Yazd in Iran at the moment - amazing place some of the friendliest people I have meet anywhere. So far I think we are in more danger of being killed with kindness or perhaps tea overdose.

Thanks again
John

Done!

And by the way - break your text for an entry into two bits - the "Enter blog entry here:" part should only be a few paragraphs and maybe a picture - the rest goes into the "Enter more text here:" box. This keeps your home page from being three miles long, and taking forever to load - which puts people off and sucks a ton of bandwidth. I have edited your "Turkey - Part 2" entry accordingly as a sample for you.

See below for details:

Blog Entry

This field is what will show in the index pages. Keep it reasonably short - approx. 1 paragraph. Both the Blog Entry and the More (Extended) Text will be displayed in full when someone clicks on the entry from the index page. In either the Blog Entry or the More Text you may use Bold, Italic, or Underline to highlight text by selecting the text and clicking on the B, I or u respectively.

More (Extended) Text
Collectively this field and the Blog Entry field above make up the body of your entry. You can use the two fields however you like: you could split up your entry over the two fields, or you could completely ignore the More text and enter only the Blog Entry text. Movable Type allows you to split up your entry for more flexibility in the display of that entry; for example, if you write very long entries, you may not want your entire entry on your index pages. You can use the two fields to control what gets displayed, and where.

Excerpt
You can enter an excerpt from your entry, or use this field to provide a summary of the content therein. If you do not provide an excerpt, it will be automatically generated by selecting the first forty (40) words from your entry, followed by an ellipsis. (...)

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
