Searches

Grant & Suzan,

When I do a search for, say, "klr tire change" on the HUBB (match all terms), almost every result will start with
"Excerpt: suzuki tech honda tech kawasaki klr ktm tech triumph tech forum other..." even though the page liked to has nothing in it about a KLR (such as Topic:…A…A GL1100 MODS).

Would it be possible for you guys to modify the search engine so it doesn't come back with results that are irrelevent? Just a thought, but that may cut down on people asking questions about things already discussed a million times...

Thanks,
Chris

Yeah, we're aware of the problem.

However - it's a problem all search engines face. What is - and isn't - relevant?

What you're running into is the Hop To: dialog box at the bottom contains most of that string you're noting!

Irrelevant search results require more diligent searching with more specific terms. Or a little browsing. I know I hate it too and it's nice to have the first one in the list be perfect. But we're not google.

AND it would be nice if we could tell the search engine not to index certain sections of hard coded stuff like the Hop To box.

And yes we are working on that - I have managed to cut the indexing of the regular menus with an update to the software and additional code in the menus themselves.

Now I have to figure out how to tweak the Perl CODE for the HUBB to do the same to the Hop to dialog.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Did it! Tweaked the Perl code so that the search engine won't index the menus on the left, the footer, or the Hop To: dialog box contents.

Good as you're going to get, trust me. From here it's a matter of getting the most out of your search terms.

It will take 12 hours or so for the HUBB search index to be updated.

The website will take about the same. No more indexing of the LEFT side menus and footers there. Should cut down on false hits.

Course all that means the newsletter will be another day late...

But a worthwhile tweak!

see I really do get things done... sometimes... eventually...

Grant

Seems to be an improvement - it actually worked! Compared to the huge number of hits yesterday, it's only 11 hits today for that search. And no menu stuff in them!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
