Exclamation Mobile phone adverts!

Hi Grant,

What's with all these mobile phone ads that are invading various forums?

Derek.

scumbag spammers - they're deleted as soon as I find out about them, and then the user is banned.

three things,,,
is it possible to auto ban posts containing a particular symbol ( currency symbols) I use this on my filtering for email spam. ( also use the word 'meta' as it blocks most html documents which many spammers use to bypass the word filters)

pick up their email addresses and use it to subscribe to dodgy websites.. then they will be on the spammers lists

everyone send 'war and peace' in pdf format or some big file to their email addy, blocking or filling up their webspace buffers.

Not a good idea as we often need to use currency symbols - and they could always use some other symbol or just say "dollars" and we'd have to ban that - etc etc etc...

Not of any use here. All non-approved html is already blocked.

This SOUNDS good but is actually a bad idea - and a waste of time.

MANY if not ALL of the spams you receive are not actually from who they say they are from! Spammers now SPOOF email addresses - in other words, use another email address as the "From" address - not their own. That way they are untraceable and ideas like the above won't work.

Worse, the spoofed addresses are just another innocent person on the spammers list, so you're signing up an innocent person - you could even be one of the people whose address is used as a spoof mail address. I know mine has been used in spoof addresses.

Best thing to do with spam is simply delete it - and let all newbies know the same. If one person in a million buys something from them it's all worthwhile. So don't buy!

hope that helps a little

Grant I would suggest a 'flag this spam' button for any objectionable content. At least it would prioritise it for you?

There is such a button already , top right above every post.
It brings you to a report-page with a form.

No worries! There are definite advantages to registering and logging in! That's not the only thing the non-logged in don't see.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
