Bikes for rent forum

Hi Grant,

Is there a strong case for a "bikes for rent forum"? It seems to me that there are certain destinations where bike rental is more feasible than shipping (eg Iceland or Japan). Obviously there is a long list of pros and cons but for those members who work and have limited holiday allowance (not to mention the expense of shipping and loss of use while in transit) this seems to be the only realistic option. There are some companies that advertise here - some doing tours others purely rentals but it would be good to get some discussion going about whether the bikes are any good, whether the service is recommended etc.

Maybe a less formal arrangement would work well. If someone has a bike in Iceland that they are happy to rent out and get serviced after each rental they would surely make some money over the summer period. It needn't be a spanking GS1200 with all the kit a cheap trailie worth a grand would suit me........ Just to get the ball rolling I would be happy to pay £250 a week for such an agreement. Buy back deals also seem to make a lot of sense.

Places I fancy visiting and want a bike are Iceland, Ethiopia and Namibia. I also go to the US regularly and would like to rent a bike for a few days and do a one-wayer.

Cheers everyone!

Matt

I would like a bike for rent forum.

On my last trip to the US, it took me a lot of searching before I found a bike that was not costing an arm and a leg to rent.
It is no problem to rent an Electra Glide or GoldWing in the US but they are very expensive but beside that there is not much choice. FInaly I found a Dutch company in LA where I could rent a BMW R850R with panniers and a windscreen for € 60 a day with unlimited miles. Thet don't have the BMW R850 anymore but they do have other bikes in that price range. Look at their (Dutch) website: motorverhuur

A forum with this kind of information would be very usefull

It would probably need to be seperated into countries/continets..

Agreed; there are posts in various forums already which offer to hire bikes on a private basis to riders, so this would bring them all into one place.

It would be a more logical place for the "buy my bike for some period of time and I will buy it back from you" type of post that also crop up from time to time.

Just like accommodation and repair workshops

And then there are the straight forward recommendations of good hirers of bikes:-

And even more importantly:

Perhaps we should just repurpose that forum a little and ADD Rentals to it -"get your bike here" - makes me think of a fish-monger... ;)

Does that make sense?

Hi Grant,

That sounds fair to me. It would tie together a few related threads in one convenient place. I must confess that I have not used the Bike Swap forum before.

Cheers.

Matt
