any way to include a word or pdf file in a post?

Hi, We have been keeping a MS word document (table) of accommodation in south america with bike/overland parking and thought it may be a useful resource for others. It also includes GPS coordinates, cost and other comments. I can save it in other formats such as pdf, but I don't have personal webspace to upload and link to it.

I would like to post it in the accommodation section or perhaps even on our blog page. Uploading a file would be easy but not sure if its possible and I don't really want to copy & paste each table entry after one year of entries. I don't think pasting the table keeps the format. Can you suggest the simplest/best way to post this info on the HUBB or Blog?

Regards
John & Alanna Skillington

You could just upload it to a file storage site and put the link here? Best would be one you can get a free account with so that it never risks being deleted

You can post it as an attachment, and then it's stored on HU in your account, so you have control of it, and it's not lost - we never delete it. "Free" accounts have a bad habit of getting closed because you don't use it.

Just click the paperclip in the top row of icons beside the font stuff, and away you go. Do note there are some file size restrictions, but a 100kb word doc should be enough!

Note that:

"Registered Users" has an attachment limit of 2,097,152 bytes, or 2 mb.

"Contributing Member" has a limit of 20,966,000 bytes, or 20 mb.

"Gold Member" has a limit of 57,671,680 bytes, or 50 mb.

Membership has it's rewards!

...now where have I heard that before... ?

Ha! I didn't know that either Grant. Most forums don't allow you to upload and store files. Very generous of you.

And by free account I meant something like Dropbox which AFAIK never gets closed/ deleted. I've been using them for years

As long as it doesn't get toooo big, we're ok. Most people have some other online storage and link to stuff, so no problem.

RE closing accounts - used to be none of them closed any accounts ever - but not anymore - don't use your hotmail account for a year - it's gone, same with yahoo, gmail etc. And Dropbox will probably follow suit at some time as millions of terabytes sit there full of files, but untouched for years.

For now, Dropbox is great, we use it too.

For your blog, that's dead easy - just upload it similarly to how you would do a photo when you create a blog post. Add the link given into the blog post and you're done.

Once you have done that, you can LINK to it and post it on the HUBB without having to ATTACH it on the HUBB, thus doubling the space used on the server!

Thanks Grant and everyone else for solutions. Internet has been off more than on here in Peru (quite normal), but yesterday I managed to set up a free Google Drive account with 15 GB of storage, also managed to upload a test file and edit it on-line. So that all seems perfect so far, then when internet was restored today I got your responses Grant. So what to do?

I think I will try to link to the file on Google Drive to see how that works, but if I have any problems i will upload file to HU as you suggested. Thanks Grant. I did do a search on this topic, but must not have used the correct key words as nothing came up.

Hi Grant, just a quick follow up question on similar topic - can I add a URL link to my youtube video into our HU blog story? I have added a URL address a few times in previous stories, but I can't work out to make it a link. I read the FAQ link you posted, but I think the blog software works differently to the Hubb posts.

Thanks
John

Yes, blogs are completely different - don't read the HUBB FAQ for the blogs, you need to read the blog manual at
How to use your Horizons Unlimited Movable Type Blog.
for the details. It's not hard, it's standard simple html.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
