Question Triumph Sprint GT

I'm new to retirement (early) and motorcycling. I have just bought a Triumph Sprint GT primarily for touring around Scotland and Europe. It's a new model with a mixed press review so far.

I just wondered if anybody else has one? If so would be great to hear from you. I did look at Honda and BMW but the idea of a British built Triumph and the wonderful 1050cc engine let my heart rule my head. Although I have lots to learn and miles to get under my belt this site is already inspiring me to think about adventure touring as well.

So both myself and the GT have yet to prove themselves as great tarmac tourers. ..and if they do I'll have to consider an adventure bike, as well as, or instead of the GT at some point in the future.

Hello Palamie,

good luck with the Sprint GT - let us know how you get on.

I've got one of the original 955 Sprint ST models and its proved a very reliable workhorse taking us all over the UK and Europe, just clocked over 70K coming back through France after the MC Piston Rally a couple of weeks ago in Northern Spain.

Enjoy your retirement.

Many thanks for the comments. Can't wait to follow in your footsteps. Took the GT out for a ride today. So much to learn about riding and overcoming my initial apprehension.

I'm inpsired by the content on UH and the almost universal dissaproval of family and friends. Time for some new friends me thinks.

Hi, it's great to see another Scottish Triumph owner on HU All you need now is to get to some of the meets.

You might want to think about joining the Ulysses Club where you will find a lot of like-minded folk. It started in Australia where it has over 28,000 members and there is now a Ulysses Club in the UK. Membership is limited to motorcyclists and their partners who are over 50, though over 40's can be junior members. The tongue in cheek motto is "Growing Old Disgracefully". The website is Ulysses > Home from which there is a link to the UK club and also a link to a BBC interview with the UK president.

My wife and I are both members of the Australian club, as I know, are many other Hubbers.

hmm so did i and it was the most unreliable expensive bike ive ever owned, £2700 engine rebuild at 3.5yrs/12k miles. triumph? never again.

sorry to hear about your bad experiances with the Sprint, ive had an early T309 Speed Triple and the Sprint ST and they've proved extremely reliable, covering many thousands of miles both here and in Europe.

I tried a BMW GS a couple of years ago and ended up stranded in Spain when the final drive packed up, i know thats not an engine failure but it was still nuisance on a bike thats only covered 30k.

Im sure Palamie will enjoy his bike.

Had nothing but good experiences with my Triumph triples - a 2009 Sprint ST 995 that did 60,000km of tough two-up touring, my current 2008 Sprint ST 1050, and a second-hand 1996 Trophy that took 2 of us and heaps of luggage around east and west Europe in 2006 without a single hiccup.

John I have joined the UK site. A small niggle but probably a deal breaker is that to join I have to send a cheque to the secretary. I havent had a cheque book in over 10 years. Being self critical I just don't see me getting one. I'm a total geek/gadget freak, not sure even how to fill a cheque in.

Will have to work out some sort of solution.

My GT has been totally reliable to date - 200 miles on the clock. LOL I have developed pretty bad tendonitis in my left hand, bike has been out of the question now for two weeks.

I have decided to join the UK Ulysses Club in addition to the Oz version so I can continue to get access to their forum after the 21 day trial period. You've probably seen some posts there from me using my real name - John Dean. I'll have to get a foreign currency cheque from my bank - which is a bit pricey - so I'm waiting until I'm sure I'll be going to their Gathering at Moreton-in-Marsh and then I'll pay for both in one hit. Perhaps I'll see you there, though I won't be on a Triumph this trip - having just bought a Honda ST 1100 on UK ebay. It's sitting in a UK Ulysseans garage waiting for me to arrive next year.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
