west coast of USA to SA, shipping ideas

:Beach:We have been planning/hopeing to ride to Peru for the last year and a half BUT when we exited Mexico in 2003 we neglected to get our tvip (temporary vehicle importation permits ) cleared at the border and now we cant bring another vehicle into Mexico, we have been in contact with aduano and the Mexican officials but nothing is working, the bikes have been sold or wrecked so we can't take them down to show we didn' sell them or leave them in Mexico so now we are wondering if anyone has shipped their bikes to SA from the west coast as this seems an option and we just by-pass central america.

In late 2008 I shipped from Vancouver BC to San Antonio Chile. Live in SW Washington but at that time it was less hassel to ship out of Canada. Check with Martina Schaarschmidt (villakunterbuntvalpo@yahoo.de) They can help you if you want to go to Chile and ride North to Peru. Martina and Enzo were good people and helped me a lot with transport and run a hostel in Velspersio Chile (sic) .

I'd advise against sending anything expensive or heavy and stick to some basics like quality perfume, body lotion, soaps and shampoo, maybe some cosmetics, also designer clothing (from well known western labels) are highly prized; i send care packages back to my family all the time filled with "designer labels" that i picked up for next to nothing from goodwill/salvation army or other thrift shops. (of course I only get stuff in good condition). I wouldn't recommend sending jewelry; if you do make sure to insure it for the entire route. lot's of mail simply disappears between here and there.

Do be careful sending anything that might melt. It is very hot there and warehouses and postal trucks are usually not air conditioned. 1 box of chocolate or melted lipstick can ruin a lot of stuff.
