Vancouver BC to Asia...

What's with the world of shipping and transport? Its like a black hole of dead internet links, inactive 800 numbers, and "No, we only ship in the US" attitudes...either that or it proves I'm a rookey...

So after several days of digging [and still waiting for a response from the airlines] I have not found a way to ship my bike to Asia.

If you know of any resources of information on this, please let me know. It will be much appreciated...

Thanks in advance.

From what I've read, your best bet is to look in the Yellow Pages and start phoning the various air freight companies. I would expect to pay something in the order of $1000 US each way across the Pacific, so unless you're going for at least a couple of months it's too expensive.

Which part of Asia? Southeast Asia? Asian subcontinent?....

Right, I suppose being somewhat more specific couldn't hurt....

I'm attempting to ship from Van BC into Japan, either Nagoya or Kansai if by air.

A buddy of mine who is a 747/767 pilot says sometimes the airlines take 'recreational property' ie: bicycles, ski gear etc. at no extra cost if you fly with them, and there *might* be a way to get a bike classified as such.

However, I highly doubt it. If I have to pay anything near $1000 US one way its just not worth it. I can pick up a bike in Japan for less than that.

But oh, how I'd miss the Thumper!!!

I tried pricing out shipping a bike to Australia a few years ago, and couldn't get a better price than that. I was only there for a month so it was much cheaper to just rent there.

Maybe someone else has a better line on prices for trans-Pacific shipping though?

After much time and effort calling and surfing, I managed to locate a decent shipping deal from Vancouver, BC to Nagoya, Japan.

If I crate the bike myself, I can get it shipped for $700 CDN plus a $300 port hand-over charge and about $60 insurance.

Well worth the effort! More info to follow as the departure date approaches...

Hi DGBH (does it stand for anything interesting?)

Not sure when you're departing. If you have more details and contact info, we'd appreciate being able to post them for other travellers. See the form at: www.horizonsunlimited.com/tripplan/shipping.shtml#shippinginfo

Thanks in advance
Susan
