Vancouver BC - Santiago Chile
 

Hi,

I looked through the planning section as advised, but can't find anyone recently air freighting their motorcyle from Vancouver B.C. Canada to Santiago Chile.

Anyone done it recently ? Or have any advice ?

I have placed a few emails and phone calls to a number of companies. One price is around $ 3500.00 one way. Too much for me for a four month trip, but that just maybe what it is, and other plans will have to be made.

Alternatively, anyone interested in selling a motorcyle down there ? I ride a Suzuki DL650, thus would be interested in a similar type motorcycle.

Was hoping to leave around November 1st. I have to be in Santiago or the Casablanca Valley area on the 23rd of November to start some volunteer work I will be doing.

So am trying to work in a 3 or 4 month bike trip around that.

Any help appreciated.

I am located in Western Washington and have been stumbling around trying to find shipping to Santiago but nothing good yet. Have been told it is easier to fly bike out of BC due to security issues in USA. My plan is to get down there first of the year. Be sure to let me know what you find out. Maybe we just have to ride them down.

Have obtained quotes from two shipping companies out of Vancouver, B.C.

One at $3500.00 plus crating fee of a $600.00 and one for $ 5000.00 plus crating feel.

Out of my range, but understand that is their businness, and they seemed to both be very thorough, and professional .

So will have consider riding down, next year, and get more time of work unless anyone knows of a cheaper solution ?

Have you checked directly with one of the airlines that fly to your destination as this may be another option.

Have you checked with LAN Chile.
 

They now have started direct flights Santiago - Toronto (yeah I know its 1/2 way across a big country) and have their own cargo planes. In theory it should be easier to ship from Canada than the US as a personal shipper.

Also I have used Air Canada Cargo (not for a bike though) and they are happy to deal directly with personal cargo.

It seems that transport is the most troublesome issue. I checked with LAN and was told I would need to go through a freight forwarder because I was "unknown" to them. Have two requests for quotes in now and will let all know results.

Have costs form a third air freight company Vancouver to Santigo at about the same price as the other two; $3500 to $5000.00

Am going to have a look at LAN and even try Air Canada's Cargo division.

You never know ?

Will report what ever I do find.

Hi,
we shipped our bikes from Vancouver to San Antonio (3th.Sept.). It takes about a month, but it´s reasonable cheap. We payed CAD $ 1400,- for 2 bikes in Canada. The cost here in Chile are about US $ 300,- to $ 350,- (habour & custom fees).

There is no trouble and you can find help with Enzo from the Villa Kunterbunt ( villakunterbuntvalpo@yahoo.de ).He & his wife Martina are very experienced in the motorcycle shipping buisness, mainly for people coming from europe.
Unfortunately their Hostel is in Valparaiso, the port for northamerica is in San Antonio (100km south), but they can make you an transport offer, they know everything (handling, custom, etc.), are very helpful and it´s really a nice place to stay.

He makes sure everthings goes OK, we got crates from a dealer in NorthVan, drove to the warehouse in Richmond, crated the bikes and that´s it.

Flying a bike is a very expensive option, so if you can handle the transport time....do it this way.

Port fees ??? Timing ?? Storage and customs clearance??
 

From past experience make sure you budget about 50% of the shipping cost as port fees on the destination end (it varies between ports and timing).

Also be careful about your timing. Make sure you allow a few weeks extra for the bike to get there before you fly in. My last shipment took an extra month and that was UK - US.

Storage fees can also be prohibitive especially if you have it stored before it clears customs (bonded storage)

Don't want to rain on your parade. Just giving some things to consider.

I am actually doing it differently. Buying a travelers bike down here and then shipping it home (sea freight) when the timing is not as much of an issue.

Hi,
we shipped with Baseline from Vancouver to San Antonio. The Forwarder is EcuLine, they have a office in Santiago. After we called, they send the Bill of Lading to their office in Valpo.

We payed CLP 163500,- at the office in Valpo, then rented a pickup (CLP 32000,-) and drove to San Antonio (ca.70ml) to the so called DRYPORT. We opened the container and had a look at the crates, everything fine !!!

Then we took the B/L downtown San Antonio (10min drive) to custom and got a free temporary permit for our bikes (30 min).

Then back again to the DRYPORT. There we uncrated and rebuild the bikes. (staff is very friendly and helpful) Another men had a look at the VIN number, make & model and license plate.
He charges altogether CLP 29500,-

Enzo from the Villa Kunterbunt managed & took care of everything....He charges a fee for his help and believe me, it´s worth the money... he makes everything much easier !!!
So, we spent about CLP 225000,- (ca. US $ 375,-) here in Chile (incl. the rental) which is not bad for 2 bikes.

... as I said, that´s how we got our bikes from Vancouver to San Antonio...

I never did get a hold of LAN, but have read from other posts about the 'frieght forwarder' issue. I tried to get a hold of Air Canada, but never received a call or facsimile back from my inquires.

The company you and Andrea used out of Vancouver ( Richmond ), plus the fellow in Valpo sounds like the way to go, and as noted, budgeting another 50% for other charges once arriving seems to be about spot on.

Looks like the way to go!

Thank Bob for posting the shipping quote. Have you decided what you will be doing? I too am looking to start a bike trip in Santiago on the 1st of the year and looking seriously at shipping a bike down rather than buying a bike there. If there is a way to combine shippments to save $$$ perhaps we should talk. Did Baseline give you an idea of how long it would take (i.e. when does the bike need to be in Richmond)?

Baseline wants the bike 40 days before it needs to be there, this means real soon. From what I can make out ship will take 28 days so if they ship to soon there will be storage charges. I dought there will be any savings shipping togther on this end but might make it easyer on the other end. I am in Guatemala, tring to learn some spanish befor the trip, will be home the 16th. May try to write more then as these Espanol key board are driving me nuts. Send me an PM if you want
