Vancouver BC -> San Diego (winter)

I'm thinking of taking a month off from work around Jan-Feb 2001. I'd like to do some riding somewhere warm and dry. I would imagine riding down from Canada through Washington/Oregon/northern CA would be pretty
rotten weather-wise. One idea I'd had was to ship one of my bikes as far south as Los Angeles or San Diego, go riding in Mexico, and then ship the bike back from LA/SD.

I've been looking on the Internet for costs on motorcycle shipping. It looks like shipping from Seattle to southern California is about $500 US each way - plus my own travel costs. This seems rather pricey to me.

Anyone have other ideas for shipping?

You might be better off arranging yourself a one-way truck rental and driving the bike down there yourself.

I've also heard AmTrack is offering a shipping deal from Vancouver, but I'm not sure of the costs or details.

Other than that....you might just want to don some rain gear and RIDE THERE!!! 8)

I checked into AmTrak. They don't have any vehicle shipping on the west coast.

Rain gear? More like snow gear!! :-(

Hmmm...I thought for sure AmTrak had a deal, but its seems as though this is a myth.

Since I was going to do the same ride this winter and didn't want to get too frozen either [in the mountain passes of NorCal], I was going to ride as far South as I could and the try to find someone driving South in a truck and see if I could pay 'em a couple sawbucks for a lift through the passes.

Since its worked for me before, and since Americans generally have a great deal of hospitality for bikers, it may be an option, albeit a less than common one.

Believe me I wish it were true. Amtrak does have an auto train on the east coast: for about $450 US you can load your bike onto the train in Washington DC, then ride in coach to Orlando overnight.
Too bad they don't have something like that on the west coast - load your bike in Seattle, then wake up in Los Angeles and start riding south.

The last two weeks the weather along the entire coast has been very mild, so I've decided instead to ride my own bike down. I plan to leave sometime in the next two weeks.
