we ll ship our toyota land cruiser in buenos aires by boat from france in august 2008, arrival in BA in september 2008 (around 20 days). then we traval 1-2 years in latin america. we have a good reliable serious cheap shipping company here in france.
but once in BA we need also a good reliable serious cheap shipping company there to take out the car from the boat/container/harbour.
if you know anyone or if you had same experience, pls let us know.
apparently, even if a carnet de passges en douanes (CPD) is not compulsory in latin america, it helps a lot on shipping arrival in BA. do you confirm ?
apparently, car insurance is not compulsory everywhere. do you confirm ?

We returned with the help of Plus Cargo.

The rep in that office was called Pablo and was very helpful.

We did the whole process with Sandra from Dakarmotos, but she said herself that it was quite straight forward and could talk you through it if you wanted to sort it alone.

Process itself was not so hard, but it was more finding the different buildings that you needed to go to.

Dakar motos must be pretty sick of taking overlanders by the hand by now. So maybe a google earth map and picture of the front of the building in a bullit point type of thing. That is if the problem really is finding the right buildings.

I doubt it as it contributes to their business and their living...

That said, Sandra was quite happy to simply point out where to go, so if any travellers wanted to go it alone, ever helpful tips were available, and if one can face the itsy bits of paperwork and a day running about, it all looked pretty easy.

for the moment, the prices we received (for a full container 20' dry only for us):
around 600-800 euros for the costs before leaving at the harbour in le havre (france)
around 500-700 euros for the boat trip
then ??? on arrival in buenos aires but it can cost a lot !

warthog : i forgot about dakar motos : of course ! they are always helpfull. you wrote about "plus cargo" do you have any contact, email, tel, etc ... in your case you were leaving buenos aires, not entering ? with a car or bike ?

The Plus Cargo contact was Pablo Benavides, in the BA Plus Cargo office: PLUSCARGO ARGENTINA S.A. AV. RIVADAVIA 413, 5º PISO OF 1, TE: 4345-1614.

We were returning our R1150GS with a stack of stuff, by sea, to the UK. Arrived in Ipswich. Delivery agent was SACO SHIPPING GMBH of Hamburg.

I’m Sandra and want to clarify some things to make the shipping easier for all of you.
First, my job is clearance custom. But before a traveler contract me I explain them how is the procedure and provide all the information so you can choose do it by your self or contract me.
Not all the companies are the same, trough all the time I’m working on this I have contacts with a lot of companies, and learn that someone’s work well for import other for export other depends on destination. What I can offer you is before you choose a company contact me so I can give you some info about the company or at least tell you if what they are charging you is correct or not. I found a lot of company that never work with personal effect (in this case your vehicles) and make a lot of mistake or give you wrong information, that finish making you have a lot of problems.
Bruce, if you are reading this you can tell your experience.
I work since some years clearance custom, and contacting companies, I learn a lot by my self and travelers experiences. I can offer you if you are thinking to ship your vehicle to BA contact me and I will help you and give all the information I have to make your experience easier.

I've just returned to the UK from Argentina with my motorcycle.
After trying to haggle a few deals around town I met the guys from FOX cargo.
Offices are based in the city center and they're good guys to deal with.

The boss raced motorcycles over in Machester UK for 5-6 years.
The bosses mate runs MotoRent Argentina Rent a Motorcycle BMW Alquiler de Motocicletas BMW Alquiler de Motos BMW en Buenos Aires Argentina from the same office.

They'll help out for sure.

I have absolutely enjoyed my time in Argentina and would recommend it to anyone. I am still here actually..
but
my experiences with shipping agents in BsAs were not such a bed of roses, although it is already just a distant memory..

After the ship arrived in the port it took a good 5 days before the shipping agent contacted me. You only get 5 days to get your bike out before it starts costing you money so it meant I needed to act fast..
Next, once we eventually get an address we go to get the Bill of Lading. They charge me around double the price (i think) with some excuse but won´t produce a receipt. hmmm. I don´t have much choice as I need the paper. We get the paper. Rush Off to Aduana. The bill of lading is a photocopy, not the original. Back to the agent after a few more inquiries higher up the ladder to add more pressure. Someone else is there who seems to know a bit more. He ´produces´ an original doc. We leave but notice they forgot to include a doc number. We get it fixed. Back to Aduana. All good until it is noticed they forgot to include that i am importing a motorcylce on the doc. Back to the agent. Make another ´original´ doc. Back to Aduana.. now this document is all ok but still more problems as we can´t get the number from customs - it is being blocked. Found out it was a problem with the shipping company (totally unrelated to original problems) and eventually manage to get the bike. No extra cost this time because it was the shipping companies fault that it was blocked.
This is the condensed version. For me it was all rather bewildering and I was pretty overwhelmed. Thankfully Sandra could help me out and did all the running around and most of the worrying for me. I wouldn´t have stood a chance with my lack of experience in this region.
So the lesson: If you can find out about your agent (mine was given to me by my company back home so I assumed they would be fine) and find one who has experience in importing motorcycles or cars you will be on a winner.
Looking back the biggest problem was that this shipping agent really had no idea what they were doing in relation to importing a motorcycle.

Don´t be scared off and don´t miss travelling through and around Argentina.

our toyota has just arrived in buenos aires (argentina) from le havre (france) on a boat inside a container (no ro-ro).
All went super fine especially in buenos aires thanx to the great and kind help of Miss Sandra and Mister Javier from Dakar Motos.
DAKAR MOTOS-HOME OF ´OVER-LAND BIKE´ TRAVEL IN SOUTH AMERICA
She has all the information about our shipping and made the custom clearance for us. Excellent help, excellent job, very nice.
