Update on air freight - North America to Europe

I just dropped off my moto at Montreal Mirabel Airport today, for a flight to Paris on Sunday.

Some things have changed since I last shipped a moto trans-Atlantic:

1) Both Transport Canada and the US FAA require that air freight from 'unknown shippers' (meaning, private persons rather than large corporations) needs to be dropped off at the cargo warehouse 48 hours ahead of time. This can be a bit of a pain if you don't have other accomodation available in the city you are shipping from. There is NO flexibility on this, 44 hours ahead won't make it, it has to be 48 hours or more ahead of time.

2) It seems it is no longer necessary to disconnect the battery cable on the moto.

3) If the moto is not 'packaged' - meaning, if it is sitting on a pallet or sitting in a container and it is obvious to all that it is a moto - then you don't need a class 9 DGR sticker on it. You only need to put a sticker on it if you have put your moto inside a box or a crate, such that it is not obvious from a quick look that it is a moto.

Will update you later on how things go - I have dealt with Devin Campbell at Motorcycle Express (third time I have shipped with Motorcycle Express) and so far I am very happy with the service Devin has provided me with.

Thanks Michael,

Please remember to fill in the Shipment form - on the shipping page, link on left, so we all have the latest info. And mention HU when you talk to MC Express!

Michael,

Your email bounced: mailbox full. So, I'm putting it here in public in the hope that you see it.

Don't know what route you are intending to take, but if and when
you are in our neck of the woods do come and look us up. We have
a bed for you.

Ciao,

Peter.

Hello Peter:

Thanks for your note and your kind offer. I didn't know the email was full, thanks also for pointing that out.

I arrived in Paris Monday morning, had the bike out of the air freight shed and on the road 2 hours after the plane landed (no complaints there - Paris CDG is the most trouble-free airport in the world to ship motos in and out of). Rode from CDG to Zurich, by way of Geneva.

I have some work to do here for a few days, then I have to go to Africa for a few weeks, but hopefully I will get down your way by mid-June. Thanks ever so much for the invite, I am looking forward to meeting you in person.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
