I'm pretty sure some German companies do this.

I don't understand all the exasperated smileys, I'm not naive but I really don't understand what I said wrong No I haven't checked airlines because I didn't think I could afford this.

As for selling the bike, the very purpose of this move is to get a used XT660 from the UK to Costa Rica where I ride 3 or 4 times a year. I'm flying down on Aug 11th to finish negotiating the purchase of a piece of land so I can house my own bike for when I go down, renting is getting expensive.

I've made the ride from the US to CR more than once, this is not the problem. They don't sell the XT in the US and I like this bike better than the KLR or DR although if I cannot afford to import the XT I will settle for the others.

I have also priced a new Brazillian XT660, since it's not sold in CR the cost of the bike + Import Tax is $10,000 + which is too much.I can buy a very low mileage 2003 XT660 for $4000 in the UK, Import Tax will be $700 +/- and that leaves shipping costs, I was hoping it would be $700 - $1000

Which is why I started the thread

Thank you for the sound advice Patrick. it is funny how different people have different favorites, sometimes something just feels right and as I've aged I've learned the value of going with your heart, if it feels right and it makes you smile.........

However, I also have limited funds and that's the very reason I need to minimize/justify the extra cost of bringing in the XT versus riding in a DR. If I can't find a cost effective method of shipping an XT the DR will be my next choice, both good bikes for 5'7". :-)

I have friends keeping an eye open for large cc trailies in CR but they are few and far between and there's a large community of German expats who grab most decent finds for their countrymates.

That said, finding a shipping agent in Costa Rica isn't an option, terrible to say but they're generally clueless, finding a UK agent is possible but I'm not sure how to go about this. Since Panama Canal is next door you would think this a good option, although passing through has little to do with off loading.

As for a freight airline, I'll start searching this forum for good leads

Thanks

Just for the record. I found nothing outside of that foolish DHL bid from Europe to Central America. There are options for a transfer from various ports both north and south but nothing direct.

Such is life

I do appreciate the help though

After giving up I read a current thread on the HUBB which gave me a lead, here are the results of that lead.

PS: Shipping is not from the UK, but close enough

Dear Mr. Lynch,

basically this is no problem for us!
We could load your motorbike either in Antwerp/Belgium or in Le Havre/France and discharge it in Pto. Limon/Costa Rica.
If that is of interest for you please provide us with the type and model of the motorbike and the cargo details (length x width x height in meters, and weight in Kilograms).

With kind regards,

Henning Backes

I sent them an email

"The bike will be pre-crated and the sizes are: 2,246 mm length; 866 mm width; 1480 mm height; 190 kg weight.

The bike will probably be trucked from London so which port is less hassle and/or which port will be cheaper?

How often do ya'll make this run? And how long does it take.

Thank You
Mike Lynch"

And their reply

Hi,
that's perfect. Shipping it in a crate is the best and safest way of doing it. Please just make sure that the box can be lifted by a forklift and by crane!
If the bike/crate comes from London probably Antwerp or Le Havre wouldn't make any difference for the trucking.
For shipment is would be easier to go via Antwerp/Belgium!

On that basis we can offer as follows:
ANR / LIO (Antwerp / Pto. Limon)
EUR 475,- lumpsum
"all in"
Loading & discharging included
Direct delivery at destination!
"garage vessels" only (Horncliff, -bay, -cap as per attached schedule)
One off

Please bear in mind that our service is limited to the pure transport of this crate. This includes the loading, lashing & securing on board, the shipment and the discharging at destination.
NOT INCLUDED are any delivery charges and costs for any kind of customs formalities at both ports.
Please also note that "direct delivery at destination" means that the receiver (you or someone appointed by you) must physically receive the cargo immediately after discharging in LIO, meaning from along side the vessel!

In the attached schedule you will find the sailings of the vessels in question. Also you will see the arrival dates of each sailing.
In case of any further questions, please let us know!

with kind regards,

Henning Backes

Thanks Patrick, I will admit that I was somewhat discouraged and almost gave up, but if we had any common sense on when to quit

We'd never finish any trip

I'll be in CR this week and one of the reasons for this trip is to see who I can talk into letting me store my bike at their place. I already have a friend marked off, all I need to do is reel him in

I'll report my progress as it occurs

Thanks again ;-)
