To crate or not to crate....

That is the question!

I've got the offer to have my bike (outfit) air freighted Darwin to KL. The company says they can do it uncrated if I like, which obviously is far less hassle and no doubt cheaper. Anyone done this and did it go ok?

I'm guessing the risk is extra dammage or petty theft, but the bike is far from pristine so as long as it doesn't collect any major dents I'm ok with it going naked.

Anything else I should be aware of??

Personally I would not crate the bike.
Shipped our V-strom in January from KL to amsteram uncrated. Saved us a couple of hours of work and 500 euro's.
They strapped the bike on a big metal pallet. Don't really see how it can get damaged. We took all our valuable stuff with us on the plane.
Good luck.

I got the same offer going from Sydney to Seoul - but when I dug into it the big difference is price. Airlines basically charge on volume and uncrated tied directly to an airline pallet I was to be charged the pallet dimensions times the height of the bike with the quote working out $4500 plus dangerous goods certificate , instead on my own pallet with volume minimised it was $2300 with certificate. In my case I minimised volume by dropping forks through clamps and removing windscreen to reduce height, and removing handlebars and chocking upright to reduce width. I could have done more and saved more - but to me that was a reasonable trade-off. Getting a suitable pallet / crate means visiting your local bike shops - they usually have ones from new bikes which they simply throw away (BMW and Triumph are especially good). There are photo's of my bike on its pallet on one of the first pages of my blog (link below). As for wrapped versus unwrapped I don't know how big the risk is but the shipping company I used recommended wrapping to make it anonymous and thus minimise risk of sticky fingers.

Hope this info helps
